UCI Honors vs. UCD

Alrighty, I just got straight rejected from UCLA, waitlisted to UCSD, really not expecting anything from UCB, and accepted to both UCI Honors and Davis. It's looking like I'm going to have to decide about these two latter ones, given that I both have been admitted to the same premedical engineering major. Any advice? I know this is on the UCI thread, but please try to not be particularly too biased...

I’ll try not to be biased. I’m a freshman right now UC Davis. It all depends on preference on where you want to live. Irvine is my home town. Irvine is a really nice and safe city while Davis is pretty much the same. Davis is one of the last college towns remaining. The city was built around the University. It has some of the brightest students and is definitely worth the experience if you are from southern california. Davis has a good programs throughout. It is all about preference. If you have any more questions, let me know.

@music remedy: I’m in the exact same situation as you! Rejected from LA, waitlisted to SD, and accepted to UCI Honors and Davis. I’m wondering the same thing as you, too! I feel like Davis is more well-known which could potentially help with employment opportunities in the future, but Irvine is more selective. I’ve visited both, and their campuses seem similar.

@musicremedy and ilyemilyem: I’m also wondering between UCD and UCI. Waitlisted to LA, waitlisted to SD, accepted to UCI Honors and UCD with regents scholarship. My major in Davis is neurobiology, physiology and behavior, and in Irvine its just Biological Sciences. I’m planning to go to med school eventually, but I don’t know which one is better. I agree, I’ve heard that UCI is more selective, but I feel like UCD has a lot of opportunities as well… any advice?

Back in 2010, I was in a similar situation. I got accepted to both UCI and UCD. However, I didn’t get into UCI Honors. I chose UCI because it was close to home, but far enough to live on campus. There are also tons of great Asian restaurants here, which was a huge plus for me haha! I absolutely love it here, but sometimes I wonder how life would be like if I went to UCD instead. I’m not a huge fan of NorCal weather, but UCD seems to offer a nice college town experience just as Hsiaoandrew stated. Irvine is really suburban, but its close to a lot of great attractions. Since you got into Honors, I suggest UCI since there are so many benefits for being in the program.

Go to the UC with honors status. It gives you priority in enrollment which is HUGE deal. You will be able to get into your labs and science classes before seniors and you will have a choice of your schedule. Good luck!

@whynotucsd, you can apply to the neurobiology major at UCI at the end of your second year if your GPA is solid; it’s one of the best programs at the university, with a selective group of about 30 smart students (all of whom you will get to know well) and a 1 year lecture series only for majors taught by teachers who love to teach. I’m also in the CHP program and the required honors classes are curved pretty generously (nice for pre-med); some are interesting, some are boring, but the early enrollment is the biggest advantage as classes (esp. upper division labs) are quite competitive to get in nowadays even with AP credits.

tough call.
I will say that for BUSINESS, UCD gets better recruiting(I’ve checked they have solid representation and their average salary statistics at the aggregate level match UCLAs more or less)

Being in honors definitely helps. Early registration is NICE. Take advantage of that if you get in and snag up the classes with the easiest professors.

I’m a senior at Irvine and I’m at the “what-if” stage in my life. I’ve definitely enjoyed myself here, but I’m a local and am wondering how life might have turned out if I applied to other unis(I only applied to UCI and nearby CSUs)

I’m only a sophomore and I’m already thinking about ‘what-ifs’ haha
