I will be a freshman nursing science student in the fall and would like to know a little about the first couple of years in the program. Which classes should I take my first year and will I really have any interaction with other nursing students my first two years or will I not really get into that until my junior year? Also, would a class sequence like humanities core or fip work with a nursing science student's schedule? Thanks!

Hey CS,

If you look at this page from the UCI catalog (scroll down about a third), it shows a sample program (course sequence) for Nursing Science majors:

[College of Health Sciences - Overview](<a href=“UCI General Catalogue Archives”>UCI General Catalogue Archives)

When you attend SPOP, you can ask your advisor how feasible it would be to use Hum Core or a FIP sequence to fulfill your GE requirements.

As you suspected, you won’t have Nursing Science courses until your junior year (other than the one in the summer after freshman year). They’ll be other Nursing majors in your Bio and Chem courses, but the number of Nursing majors is pretty small and the number of Bio majors is pretty large. I would hope the Nursing department makes an effort to help the lower-division Nursing majors get to know each other.

Good luck!

I have seen a sample course, but I wasn’t sure how it would work out after applying my APs and college courses already taken. Thank you for the help! :)

csthomas, im really interested in the nursing science major @ UCI so I would like to know what your gpa and sat score to see my chances hehehe if its not too troublesome…
thanks!

I’m going to be a freshman & am in the Nursing Science major, and I’m taking Bio Sci 93, Chem 1a, Writing 39B, and Sociology for my first quarter (though I think I’m going to drop Sociology cause I’m taking two GE classes right now during summer session)

@ sunnybanana
I had a 4.2 gpa and 1910 sat, but I was suuperr involved in school with clubs, sports, and aps; I think the teacher recommendations play a big part because I had a friend who had pretty much the same gpa and extracurriculars who didn’t get into the major, but I could be wrong :P

As for the getting in touch with other nursing majors, at the nursing orientation i THINK they said they set up a kind of thing where the nursing students can meet and get in contact from each other but I don’t remember lol, my baddd

Hey sunnybaNANA love the name!

I was actually one of those students that got my stuff together the last two years of high school, so i ended up with about a 4.0 average gpa and a 1710 sat score. What i had that probably got me into the program was lots of experience in the medical field… i volunteered in the surgical department at a hospital for several months, attended a medical leadership conference in berkeley, took the rop health class at my high school, and had lots of other medical volunteer opportunities through the rop program. I suggest maintaining your grades while still snagging ANY opportunity to volunteer in medicine!

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions!

And gotthatswing, which spop did you go to? Can you believe there are only 42 of us?

oh, and i forgot to add that i got automatic acceptance into uci and other ucs through the ELC program… top 3% (im pretty sure) in your high school. this may have contributed to my acceptance to the nursing program as well but i’m not sure :)

@ csthomas
thanks a lot! (-: ill be on the lookout now for any volunteering opportunities that has to do with medicine hehe :-D

What is the average GPA and SAT scores for incoming UCI nursing undergraduates?

im not sure… i would email the program maybe
