UCI vs. Cal Poly Pomona

I’m trying to choose the school I want to go to. Does UCI have a good program for Electrical Engineering? Are there job/internship opportunities? What about research opportunities? How does the school compare to Cal Poly Pomona?

Both schools are very good for Engineering but have a different in campus “vibe”. I would look at the EE curriculum at each and determine if one is better than the other. My husband works for a heavy civil construction company that prefers CPP and SLO graduates since they are better prepared for their jobs after graduation. Must be the “hands on” or “learn by doing” philosophy of teaching. Good Luck and both schools are very good options.

My son got accepted into SJSU, UC Santa Cruz and CPP. He is waiting for UCI but very interested in CPP. I would like to know how CPP’s CIS program compared to UCI. We are from North Cali so I also would like to know about business college’s dorm life like safety, the quality of food and lodging…He has no friends applying to CPP. If he makes a friend during frosh orientation, is it possible to rearrange room so he can share the room with his new friend? As his mom, I know that he will excel better when he feels comfortable in his environment. Thank you so much for your help in advance!

At orientation he would be staying in a random 2-3 person dorm in one of the freshman housing communities (Either Middle or Mesa). He could dorm during the year with that person/people if he chose to but the orientation would have to be one of the earlier ones. Orientations (a.k.a. SPOP) are held anywhere from June to end of August, and I believe during the later orientations he would have already turned in his housing preferences form.

As far as safety, the dorms are located directly on campus and they feel very safe at night. I also know Irvine has some of lowest violent crime rates in the entirety of the United States.

As for food, there are three dining halls he could eat at with his required meal plan. Middle Earth has two within their community and Mesa has one. Their are several different meal plans but most people here just go with the 7-day unlimited access one as to not worry about running out of meals. With his meal plan he would also get $50-$100 worth of Flex Dine dollars which can be used at other on-campus fast-food joints like Subway or Panda Express.
