I'm immensely nervous & anxious with the upcoming application decisions from the UCs.
Could any of you please chance me for my major? UCLA is my #1 goal school & I'll be tremendously ecstatic if I get accepted.

GPA: 3.31
Pre-Reqs: Completed all but Archaeology (will be completed during the summer before transfer)
TAP: No
Essay: Strong

UCLA:
Primary Major: Anthropology BA
Alternate- Anthropology BS

Please let me know if I have a good shot with UCLA---anything to ease this unsettling feeling of getting rejected by this awesome school :(

Hi. So I’m the answer you’ve been looking for.

Last year, I applied to UCLA w/ a 3.31 GPA exactly like you. I applied from my CCC, and was accepted. However, I had completed every single transferable Anthropology course offered at my CCC and then some.

However, i completed my Scholars Honors Program provided by the CCC I was at, where upon completing the program I was a a part of UCLA’s TAP program (Not TAG).

Nevertheless, last year I was indeed accepted into UCLA, though did not go to UCLA considering I was lacking one transferable Math course, which I completed this past fall at another CCC…and am spending these next few months vacationing in China for the time being.

I’m confident i’ll be accepted into UCLA once again, considering my Personal Statement was about my last venture to China, where I visited northern China with the intent of visiting an array of Archaeological sites…and this past fall modified my essay stating I would be returning to China to visit to do some excavation as well. Currently i’m in Xingtai, China at the time of this typing.

EDIT: I don’t believe you’re allowed to take any courses after this Spring before transferring into a university…

At least, not that’ll count towards the decision making.

The fact that you havent finished all of your pre-reqs yet (all must be completed by spring) could really hurt your chances - especially for UCLA.

You seem to be misinformed about a few things…

First, finishing your last prereq in the summer won’t really count as you being done with your prereqs; UCLA is very clear that all prereqs need to be done by the spring before transfer.

Also, you say you did not do TAP but you listed an alternate major. Only people in TAP can have alternate majors.

Since Anthro is a pretty easy major to get into, I’d say you’re a slight reach but not finishing your prereqs will probably hurt your chances.

@holidays, why again didn’t you go to UCLA if you were accepted? I’m a little confused by your post…

I’d say UCLA is a reach for you for 2 reasons: 1. You did not complete all pre reqs by spring prior to transfer and 2. No TAP. TAP just helps but isn’t required. May of been a good thing for you since your gpa isn’t super competitive. From one UCLA anthro hopeful to another, good luck

Shinra, last year when I applied to most of the UC’s for 2010 Fall Acceptance, I was admittedly to all schools minus Berkeley.

I was acceptance with the condition i’d have my IGETC completed by the end of Spring 2010, which was not the case. I failed to meet one course requirement, the transferable math class.

I attempted a transferrable math course in spring of 2010, but to no avail. My acceptances were rescinded by all UC’s, and was forced to re-take that math transferable course this past fall, 2010, at another CCC. I’ve reapplied once again to all the UC’s and am confident i’ll get accepted into UCLA once again, though Berkeley is the tough, but hopeful, reach for me.

Since completing that transferable math course in the fall and having applied to all the UCs already, this has given me ample time to hide away in a small city in China with my best friend, simply hanging out…waiting for the UC decisions to come out.

holidays - i’m sort of on a similar boat as you. applied to several different UCs for Fall 2007, got in to all except for Cal. my GPA was like a 3.5 for poli sci or something. Thought about going to LA, but didnt end up finishing up my pre-reqs in the Spring…so i figured my acceptance would be rescinded and moved to latin america for a year and a half.

have you improved your GPA since then? and are you aiming for Cal too? Best of luck to you, hope it works out…i know UC’s love it when applicants have done constructive stuff abroad.

You have a decent chance. Cross your fingers immediately and do not uncross until the end of next week lol

I’ve spent a lot of time on this forum and I haven’t seen any Anthro majors get denied with a 3.3 or higher. I did see someone with a 3.26 get denied but I think he was missing a class or two.

What grades did you get in the three pre-reqs you have completed?

As far as prereqs go, i’m not sure how badly that will hurt you. but as far as GPA and TAP are concerned. Take a look at the following thread of last years UCLA acceptances. Maybe you can message them and ask about your situation and how it compares to theres.

The following got in:

Major-Gpa-Tap-Name

Anthropology - 3.2 - *TAP/i - Holidays

Poli-Sci (impacted) - 3.4 - No Tap - KelliC03

Poli-Sci (impacted) - 3.45 - No Tap - Stevo360x

Philosophy - 3.23 - No Tap - Predicthisflick

Anthropology - 3.41 - Tap - (Not all prereqs finished) - tiatot

Math/Econ - 3.2 - No Tap - applej4x

Anthropology - 3.45 - No Tap - nam290

Linguistics - 3.2 - No Tap - (Hadn’t started prereqs) - IloveSD08

Afro-American Studies - 3.31 - No Tap - MNDavis

Anthropology - 3.36 - No Tap - Janethedoe

Don’t get discouraged I think you look fine!

Thank you very much for the responses & reassurance from some of you. My biggest regret is not completing that last prereq before the spring semester but I’m still praying hard that I’ll get accepted. Regarding further details about me that’ll potentially help with UCLA’s decision, I earned A’s (4.0) in my prereq major courses, I made a plethora of mistakes with my science courses (I’m aiming for a career in the dental field) yet I brought up my grades and even earned a spot on the dean’s list last semester. I poured my heart & soul into my personal statement & greatly articulated on the mistakes I made during my initial college semesters & how I turned things around for myself. Please let me know if these aspects would help with the decision making process. I definitely have my fingers crossed for the best. Thank you immensely for the feedback & responses

1) Have upward grade trend. (Very Important)
2) Explained your mistakes and how you turned it over in your personal statements. (Good)
3) have a 4.0 Major GPA and (even though they dont count it) show progress in completing your prereqs over summer) (Good)

All three of those things will ABSOLUTELY be considered in reviewing your application and will help you out as well.

Below average GPA showing sharp upward trend looks a lot better than a consistent history of average grades.

In other words. “F’s to A’s” Trumps “Straight B’s” as far as my knowledge goes and my sources tell me.

I’m gonna keep checking back on this thread. Please make sure to keep us posted regarding your acceptance status.

Cherry, I’ve indeed raised my GPA since last year considering I had a nagging “F” in Math following me around but have since had it replaced with a “C” letter grade. It’s one of two “C’s” in my transcript…the other “C” also in a lower level math taken years ago.

Being in China, my calendar states i’m one day ahead…but really am checking my admissions statuses when everyone back in the states is asleep…meaning i’ve got to wait one day in order actually see the Cal results be posted at the end of the month and it’s all slowly killing me! :-)
