UCLA Appeal.

so i found out from a source that i am, after all, rejected to ucla =(. because of missing calc 2 so it sucks.

Now i can start writing my appeal, but i want to get some feedback before i do. this is what im planning to write on my appeal.

so i attended Purdue university(in indiana) my first semester of college, and during that semester, i had to travel back home 4 times in the semester(home=california) because my mom fell sick. i really couldnt concentrate on studies because of her health, so i decided to move back home to take care of her. i transferred after my first semester back home, and transferred to a private university here. purdue, being a really amazing business school, i went into a third tier school here. i basically commuted 3 hours a day, to and from school, while taking care of my mom's health, and my younger sister, who was 11. (picking her up and dropping her to school, cookin for her etc) so i really couldnt concentrate either. i got a 3.4 that semester. i had to move back because after the deaht of my father in 2003, my mom became a single mother, and is trying to put 3 kids through college. my brother just graduated(he couldnt transfer home b/c he was in his senior year, so i had to make the transfer for her), and im on my way!

then my mom got okay over the summer after surgery, so i moved to campus for fall 2008, where i started my career. i earned a 3.82 (3A's and 1 B+) GPA, and started working 2 jobs. I even participated in a few school events, and also began coaching a little league girls basketball team and became a senior mentor for young minority girls. during my spring semester, i am expecting a 3.91 GPA for the 4 classes that i am enrolled in, and also have been accepted into the Honors COhort program of my business school, where only 30 business students get selected to based on extensive review consisting of GPA, 3 interviews and letters of recommendations. i was happy to be selected for the 2011 class!

the only thing against me big time is that i could not finish calc 2 because i decided to transfer to ucla 2 weeks before the application was due, and i couldnt sign up for calc 1. so imtaking calc 1 now, ut i dont want to tell ucla that! i had to get assurity that my mom was okay ebfore i could make a decision to transfer to a school a bit far away from school, but i really want to goto UCLA.

do you think i'd have a shot at all through appeal? (and btw, all of this is true, no lies) and how can i make it better?

you didnt already put this info on ur november applications (in the personal statements), did you?

Sounds like a strong appeal to me. I would just try to be as honest as possible.
From what source did you already find out you were rejected?

you should google ms. sun. she’s always giving advice to people on how to appeal and stuff on her blog. apparently, she worked with ucla and ucb on admission stuff, but i forgot what it was. lol she can help you, i’m sure.

^ [Ms. Sun’s Admissions Guide to Highly Selective California Public Universities](http://askmssun.livejournal.com/)

i listed the part about my mom being sick, but i didn’t list all of this exactly. i feel that they’ll just look at missing calc 2 and put a big reject on my app without reading the personal statements. so yeah, i know its no harm in trying, but i want ot try.

i just hope its strong enough and i can work it better.

blain11 - one of our family friends works in ucla admissions, he is a admissions applications reviewer there.

allisonn - thanks for the advice! i think im going to look her up.

and btw, for everyone, from a confirmed source - financial aid summary = 100% accepted =) (unless u screw up big time)

hey, I’m planning to write my appeal and i heard the appeal has to be new information.but i feel like the only reason i’ll be rejected is because of my grades. however, the past winter quarter I’ve received 3.95 (5 classes) but I feel like that’s not enough to make them reconsider me? what else should i put?

lakersallday - sorry, i really am not allowed to say anything. but, the person told me that people will start hearing by the end of this week. it’s taking this long because it takes time to upload all the decisions, as there are over 40,000 decisions they have to upload.

I would also like to know how you already know that you’ve been rejected.

if all that IS true, i would say you have a great chance. If there was any way you could prove it in the letter that would be better because i’m sure people make stuff like that up all the time.

please disregard my last statement.

ooh so FA summary is confirmed?! i didnt even trust the lady on the phone 100% today

peppamintt they told you that you were rejected straight out?

something like, i realize this information can easily be fabricated, so i have included… documents…proving…

Sweet, Financial summary= 100% acceptance.

i can provide her medical documentation. would that be sufficient?

and yes, financial summary u are in. even though this person said that admissions and FA dont work together at all. basically, whoever FA has seen has been accepted, they upload summary for. so there’s a lot of people who are accepted, but haven’t been uploaded yet b/c FA begins their review after they get notified that people have been accepted, and that doesn’t happen until end of march, then UCLA starts making final decisions on applications. So FA doesn’t have much time at all.

i would also give proof that you had to move in order to take care of her.

how do i give proof of that? it was my personal choice, that my brother and i decided to make, as she wasn’t getting better.

most i can do is provide medical documentation, and state that i have no family in california as i am from an international country. (moved here about 7-8 years ago) all my family is in india.

i’m not sure how you would prove your change of residence. It might be a little much anyways. I like how you say it was your ‘Choice’ as she wasn’t getting better. More compassionate than what some might say is an obligation.

peppamint…so if you call them and ask them if u got in or not, they are willing to tell you…that’s weird…how did u find out?? :(
