UCLA BizEcon hopeful - Need Advice!

I just completed my first year at CC and will apply to UCLA BizEcon in November. Currently I'm doing TAP and I'm in the honors program at my CC. By summer's end I'll have completed 33 units with a 3.72 GPA.

Right now my Fall 2010 semester looks like this:

Calculus 2 - Honors Micro Econ - Accounting 1 - Honors Theater Appreciation (15 units)

My goal for this semester is to achieve a 4.0 which would bring my GPA up to about a 3.8-3.85 area, but I'm a little hesitant about the Calculus course because I'm not sure I'll be able to definitely pull the A in it.

So, my question is this: Should I wait until SPRING to take this calculus course? I feel that I should do this because in the spring, my application will already have been submitted and there will not be as much pressure to get an A in the class (as my app is already being evaluated using fall grades). The plan is to swap out the calculus course with a philosophy course (philosophy is my alternate major w/ the honors program). Doing this will significantly increase my chances to pull the 4.0 fall semester and would definitely be better for me.

My only concern is that waiting a semester to continue my math is going to be detrimental in the eyes of admissions, and I don't want to risk not being accepted because I chose to wait on a calculus course.

Any insight or help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

yeah wait until spring for calc. taking calc and acct at the same time isn’t easy.

Take Calc 2 and work hard. If you have the prereqs done before you apply, it’ll look a lot better than if it’s IP.

Calc 2 , Acct 2, and Macroecon (if you haven’t taken already) looks bad on IP. That’s like half of the pre-reqs on IP.

I think you should tough it out and take calc. UCLA admissions know people do this and look down on it. On assist.org it says, “The calculus course requirements should be met as early as possible”.

TBH, your gpa is already a bit low for bizecon. But a 3.85(TAP) with calc2 looks significantly better than a 3.85(TAP) without calc2. Keep in mind that ucla’s bizecon is getting harder to get into, I wouldn’t be surprised if the avg gpa next year is 3.96 or something. Imo, you should do everything you can to be more competitive, gl.

I already recieved an A in honors macroecon, and Im taking honors micro and acct1a in Fall, so they won’t be IP by the time they review my app. Only things left to take in spring will be Calc 2 and Acct 2.

Thanks for the feedback, and any more is greatly appreciated.

why don’t you apply to the econ/international area major
if you earn a minimum 3.5 GPA in the rest of the prereq(Econ 11 and 101) for biz econ in UCLA, you can still be officially accepted into biz econ

I’d have completed Calc 1, Both micro/macro econ and Acct 1a by the end of Fall 2010 leaving me with only Calc 2 and Acct1b to be completed in the spring.

Will pushing Calculus back one semester actually have THAT MUCH of an effect on my transcript in the eyes on UCLA admission? That seems a bit exaggerated but any input is welcomed :)

Maybe you don’t understand how hard it is to get into BizEcon.

Scroll down to BizEcon to see that the average GPA of those admitted was 3.94.

Consider applying to a different area if you really want into UCLA.

I do understand that. 3.94 being average, meaning they take some higher and some lower.

Ideally I would rather take calculus in the fall, but the only thing that worries me is if pushing it back a semester will truly be detrimental to my admissions.

Thanks

they allow me to finish the prereqs by the end of spring, so i think you should be fine

I meant ideally I would rather take calculus in the spring****
