UCLA Business Econ question

I'm in my last semester of community college and UCLA is one of the places I applied to as a business econ major.

I read assist.org's articulation page and it said that ALL pre-reqs need to be completed by the spring semester before transferring.

It looks like I have done all of them, except Managerial Accounting.

So...
1) Does this mean I can automatically consider myself rejected?
2) Do I still have a chance to be accepted into my alt. major of Economics? I have completed all the listed pre-reqs for that.

More than likely option 1 unfortunately. Economics is extremely impacted as it is so it’s highly unlikely you’ll get in for that having selected it as your alternate major. Business Econ is also extremely impacted so you have virtually no chance if you don’t have all the classes finished. I would say 99% chance rejection but then again the only people who really know are at UCLA admissions so you never know maybe you’ll get a pleasant surprise come April.

Thanks.

Not completing that acct. course was a careless mistake and I didn’t do my research properly; each campus has different requirements for that major. UCLA was my third choice (behind UCI and UCSD) and I didn’t pay much attention to it.

call them to find out for sure. good luck. i graduated from UCLA in 1991 (Econ/Business). that degree wasn’t very useful for employment purpose. if you want to get a job post graduation, i would recommend a degree in accounting.

You’re only eligible for an alternative major for UCLA if you completed TAP at your CC. Otherwise, you won’t be reviewed for an alternate. The requirements are absolute when they’re specified as mandatory on Assist.org, so unfortunately it seems almost certainty that you’ll be rejected for Business Economics. If you are TAP certified and you qualify to be re-evaluated for your alternate major, as long as you meet all the Economics major requirements and you have competitive stats, which you should if you applied to Biz Econ (3.9+ GPA and strong ECs) I don’t see why you wouldn’t have a decent chance for your alternate of Economics.

From my understanding, you cannot list an alternate major that is impacted. =</p>

@dilapidatedmind
Are you sure about that? Because I applied to the school of engineering, which TAP does not apply to, and the option was still there to list an alternate major. It did say that it was unlikely they would look at your alternate, but that it was still at least a possibility.

[Transfer Applicants - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/faq/TR_During.htm)

It does still allow everyone to list an alternate on the UC app, but I know it’s very very rare, if it even happens at all, that they review you for two majors within in the college of l&s. There may be a different policy for students that apply to a separate school at UCLA like engineering, nursing, etc and then list an alternate major in the college of l&s. But I wouldn’t count on being evaluated for a first choice and an alternate major in the college of l&s, unless you completed TAP. The OP specifically mentioned they applied to Biz Econ and Econ, which are both impacted in the college of l&s. Unless he or she has TAP I doubt they will evaluate him or her for both majors.

Maybe because of this?

And kb4692 looks like you’re out of luck. I completely forgot that TAP didn’t apply to certain majors. A better strategy probably would’ve been to apply to Economics and then choose something non-impacted like Math - Econ as a back up.

No, it’s okay. UCLA isn’t my first choice anyway. I knew chances of getting in were slim.

Also, to myboby123: Is this degree really useless? You’re making me a bit concerned. It’s too late to change majors…I’ve already accumulated too many units, and I’ve already TAG’d a campus for Business Econ.

One person is not a large enough sample size…

What I did and I recommend a lot of CCers to do is look up people who recently graduated with a specific degree from the university they are transferring to and what they are doing now on Linkedin.

Copy+Paste this into google

site:linkedin . com “University of California Davis” “Managerial Economics”

ex:
<a href=“site■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ "University of California Berkeley" "Economics" - Google Search”>site■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ "University of California Berkeley" "Economics" - Google Search;

Remove the spaces after linked before com (or it makes it a weird link), include the quotes, replace the university with yours and the major with yours. It’s not perfect but it’s intriguing and lets you know where different people went.

Still…what does one REALLY do with a business econ degree?
UCI already said that the major isn’t the same as the business admin degree.

good information!

I would say its a good good degree due to its versatility.

Employers aren’t going to heckle you about the difference between business administration and business economics. It all depends on what you want to do. It’s so broad. You can do accounting, management, banking, consulting, real estate etc. the list goes on and on.

Yes, but how do I know which field to go into?
I don’t know anything about those you mentioned except that they’re business-related, and I’m sure the UC won’t give me a play-by-play for each one.

That’s why you start visiting the career center. They will have seminars, speakers, interest tests you can take, books about careers, alumni you can meet with, etc. Internships are an important way to get experience and to explore fields. And you seem to have already discovered the Internet, a great source of information

Got it. Thanks. I always thought the Career Center was just for job recruitment.

Once I transfer, I will definitely go there.
