Anyone get into UCLA but not UCSD?
Not that I'm saddened in any way, because UCLA astronomically beasts SD, but I'm just curious. Something is sketch about that.

no fishiness here. “Holistic Review” (to use UCLA’s own words) vs. Statistical Review at UCSD.

They just don’t want kids that do nothing but study and have no real substance. Not that not having any ECs means you haven’t got substance, but it’s generally a good indicator of it.

akmeecheen- By “they,” do you mean UCLA (since holistic would take every aspect into account)?
And people on the SD boards seem to think I though SD was a bad school- on the contrary I think its an excellent school, but I’m just joking around.

I got into ucla and rejected by ucsd. had a 2140 sat and 3.97 weighted gpa. I had a pretty unique personal statement though, I think ucla took that into consideration more so than sd.

mmmh. don’t ALL colleges nowadays say they do ‘holistic review?’

If UCSD really is a a stats-only place, son would have been admitted to UCLA and not UCSD. Anyway, if you’re bummed about UCLA over UCSD, I know more than a few kids who would be willing to trade places!

@UVaHoo87: Not quite. Cal Poly SLO was pretty blunt about how they only consider the stats. You list your ECs, but the admissions rep who visited my school said its just to see you’re at least doing something productive with your time and barely factors into your application.

UCSD is strictly on a point system. They give you points for SAT scores, GPA, first generation, essays, etc. If you don’t make the cut, you don’t make it. Seriously.

UCLA’s holistic review looks at each student as an individual and takes into consideration the “entire package.” UCSD assign points for everything. The two very different systems invariably produce two very different results.
