UCLA C/O 2021 WAITLIST THREAD

S2 is saying he will likely stick with UCSD even if UCLA comes through. S1 is at UCSD and having an excellent time there and career opportunities are going very well. Is there anything compelling about UCLA over UCSD for biological sciences? Open question.

Do you guys think if we call, they will give us some kind of timeframe? I really am super stressed about this.

@kmde307 … my son is going into Electrical Engineering major.

@patertrium: In terms of career opportunities, quality of education, and type of experience, I think UCSD and UCLA are pretty comparable. The dominant theme will be “Major Public Research University.” There’s incredible biomedical research occurring at both schools. Personally, I don’t think there’s any difference in terms of prestige for a bachelor’s degree from UCSD vs UCLA (based on my experience working in a biomedical field, and on personal experience with both universities). I think the difference is more in the general college experience one would have at UCSD vs UCLA. UCLA: established NCAA division I sports, LA culture, more out-of-state/country undergrads, more influence of frats and sororities. UCSD: quieter setting, residential colleges, more nerdy atmosphere, more predominantly CA-resident undergrad population, heavier beach influence, better air quality. For the mainstream biological sciences-based careers, it is very common to go on to graduate school, and both colleges will prepare a student for that.

Waiting for a star to fall. Idk why they increase the number of waitlists while they intended to accept only a very few.

it’s may 14, why hasn’t there been an in state wave yet??

@kshawhan Could it be possible it already happened, but it was very small?

@FlapDragon can u pm the link?

i gave up on UCLA waitlist. judging from last year and year before timeframe, i think we will only hear rejections from here on out

Does anyone know if you can appeal if they deny after the waitlist?

@spadow4000 If an applicant is waitlisted, they are not eligible to appeal.

@"uclabound2017? yes but am I able to appeal after the rejection?

@spadow4000 Unfortunately you cannot do that. After UCLA updates your admission decision, it will be final. No appeals allowed.

At this point I would say in-state people should stop hoping for UCLA, and should emotionally commit to the college where you SIR’ed. I think that if there were a lot of in-state spots, we would have heard about it here. We’ve heard a few sporadic reports about in-state admits from the waitlist, but those reports, if true, could be special circumstances. My guess is that UCLA met or exceeded their expected yield for in-state applicants, thus no need (or room) for anyone from the waitlist. For computer science, my guess is that there was an increase in qualified applicants this year compared with last (since the major is becoming ever more popular), at UCLA and for colleges in general. So yields everywhere are likely to be higher than in the past, and perhaps higher than projected. So my guess is no in-state admits from the waitlist, particularly for CS.

Now for my pep-talk to all of the in-state UCLA hopefuls that will end up at other UC schools: UCLA is a good school but it is best to think of it as the University of California campus that is located in Los Angeles. The experience at each UC campus is different, obviously, but the educational experience is really dominated by the common themes of UC. You will get a good education at any of the UC schools, and where you end up in your career and life will depend more on what you make of your college time than on which particular campus you attended. Admission to the University of California has gotten extremely competitive, and the seat you hold, though it might not be at the LA campus, is nonetheless a valuable thing that many applicants would be extremely happy to have. Now is the time to embrace the campus that has accepted you, and to begin the emotional transition to being a student at that campus.

What about international students???

Okay, here is the thing. I am an international student from China, I got in last friday. I put undeclared social studies. Two weeks ago, I popped in the admission office and the front desk guy told me that usually the possibility of getting accepted is less than one percent this year, because this year there had much fewer students chose not to enroll in. Also, i check the stats of 2015. There are 5000+ waitlisted, 3200 opt-in and less than 300 got accepted. I called last tuesday, the assistant guy told me, they will send the email to everyone who was not accepted after they reviewd everyone and ensured no more people quited

Hope this would be helpful and good luck u all!

I was waitlisted at Berkeley and UCLA. However, last week I was accepted into Berkeley. But, instead of starting in August with the rest of the 2021 class, I would begin in January after others graduated that year. Although I was accepted into Berkeley, I found out that it wasnt the school for me and I hope that someone else is happy to get off the waitlist in my stead. But, i’m still waiting to hear back from UCLA, and I’ve read other people have already gotten accepted. I doubt that UCLA has the need for more biology majors, and I know we’re supposed to wait until June 1st but im getting discouraged too :frowning:

@juneiper if you get off of the waitlist for berkeley and are offered january start, you can still choose to start in the fall if you take your classes off campus (FPF Berkeley or FPF SF). I guess its too late now lol but yeah

any updates?
