UCLA Chances

Hi all,
I am in my sophomore year, and have only 1 B till now, and taking 2 APs this year (stats and psych), 3 next year (junior year: Lang, APUSH, Comp Sci), and 4 or 5 senior year (Calc BC, Physics, Chem, Art History, MAYBE Spanish) . I have a 1550 SAT.

I’m also doing an internship with a software company this summer and am going to do a part time programming job over 11th and 12th grade (junior developer; only on weekends and some hours on weekdays). I also have a microsoft certification for programming in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I’ve been coding since 8th grade and know some languages by now (JS, C#, SQL, CSS, HTML, JQuery, and some other libraries).

I am volunteering at this afterschool academy thing where we help teachers teach/manage little kids (about 60 hours for that by the end of this year). I can do that over the summer too (I don’t NEED to do it over the school year).

I’m also going to be in cabinet for an Animal Rights club at my school for next year, but haven’t done much for the club this year (I just got the position cuz no one else applied). I

Lastly, I am going to be teaching elementary kids how to code at my local elementary school for about an hour or 2 a week for the next 2 years (not this year). I did get permission for that  Idk if it counts for hours though.

So what do y’all think my chances for getting into UCLA are? I’m also planning on taking 3 SAT Subject tests (Math Level 2, Chem, Physics). And maybe self study for AP Calc AB next year if I get some time.

Thanks!!

You are doing very well but UCLA rejects many qualified applicants each year. Consider UCLA a Reach school and research many other schools that would be solid Match and Safety schools so you have a balanced college list when you apply.

Ok, thanks!
Do you think I can do anything else to increase my chances?

Keep up your HS course rigor and GPA, do the things you love (EC’s), apply widely and love your safety schools.

What do you think would be considered my “safety schools”?
Sorry for the late reply.

Are you a CA resident? What is your current unweighted GPA and do you have any test scores?

A safety school would be a school that is affordable, you are willing to attend no matter what happens in the admissions process and you have a guaranteed acceptance. Without GPA, test scores, home state, college budget and intended major, no one can make any recommendations.

If they aren’t already, get your math scores (SAT, SAT 2) up to 800. Get 5’s on the AP exams you’re taking this year and next. Gain leadership positions in the clubs/organizations you’re in.

@Gumbymom I’m a CA resident. My GPA is a 3.96 (1 B so far). I have a 1550 SAT (780 R, 770 M) but it’s without the essay. My intended major is comp sci.
@alicantekid Okay, thanks for the advice!

UCLA CS ADMIT RATE 2018: The admit rate for CS for the fall of 2018 is 8.2%. The average CS ACT score was a 35 and the SAT was a 1550 average.

You are on target so far but you will have to retake the SAT with essay and you have another year of grades needed for an accurate UC GPA.

Safeties can get tricky with high stat applicants since some schools may practice yield protection which means they know you are using them as a safety and may waitlist to determine if you are really interested.

UC Santa Cruz has a very good CS program which stats wise would make an excellent safety. Definitely apply widely to the UC’s, SLO, USC , Stanford and Santa Clara if your stats remain consistently high. There are many other out of state schools to consider for CS so do your research and best of luck.
