UCLA com studies Transfer

Hi all, so basically this is my case.

I was admitted into Cal Poly Pomona's communication studies in 2011 when I graduated from high school, and I admit I didn't do very well in high school since all the fun was going on at that time (but somehow I still got into a university, or probably because I chose communication)

Basically, I know communication studies at Cal Poly Pomona is pretty bad, since it's a polytechnic school. So, when I finished my first year at Cal Poly, I decided to "transfer", while still leaving a spot available back at Cal Poly, to a local community college (Pasadena City College) and plan to finish my lower division units there and THEN transfer to a UC.

My dream school is UCLA, I have also considered USC but for some personal reason I really want to go to UCLA instead of USC even though USC has a better Communication Program. I also know that I shouldn't just aim for UCLA since its like aiming for the moon, and usually people would fail and fall on the stars (other UC's like SD, Davis, SB, Irvine, etc.)

When I finished my first year at Cal Poly, my GPA was exactly at 3.5, However, Cal Poly Pomona runs on a quarter system and they do count A- and A+ differently. As the result of that, I don't know what my GPA will be if they would be calculated into my CC GPA (since its on a semester system)

SO, after saying my story, my question is this. Has there ever been any similar cases like mine, transferring from a 4-year university to a Community College and then transfer to another 4-year university. Also, how would the GPA be calculated, would they merge together with the GPA from community college or will they be separated when I send in my application. I am planning to send in my application in November 2013 and apply for Fall 2014.

So far I am on my second semester in PCC and my first semester I only managed to get 2 classes (8 units) but I got two A's from there.

Also, what should I aim for with my cal poly GPA, will it really going to affect me with that quarter-system 3.5 or will it be somehow higher if would be converted into semester-system GPA?

Sorry for such a long post but I am worried about my chance of transferring into UCLA communication studies since I know its a super impacted major. By the way, beside UCLA, how good are all the other UCs on the major of communication?

I have also considered of switching major so I would have a better chance of getting into UCLA, but right now I am confused and don't know what I should do with my case. (Possibly Sociology maybe? lol)

oh and last question, will TAP help me and should I apply for it??

Anyways, thanks soooo much for reading this ridiculously long post and every reply will all be appreciated

You most likely won’t get in with your GPA. I suggest you switch majors to something like Sociology, Anthropology, English, etc. You’ll have to take aprox 11 courses for the major which leaves you with around 9 electives which you can take 9 Comm classes. My friend did this last year. I opted to do Anthro and minor in Film.

I’m transferring to UCLA. I started off at a CSU then I went to a community college. They will calculate your 4-year GPA as is. If you have a 3.7 (with your - and +) then it will stay a 3.7. No special changes. I believe that the two GPAs will be averaged out to become an overall GPA.

thank you guys for answering, however I am working toward right now finishing my major requirements and everything so I just got another 4.0 in spring semester that has just passed(14 units)

I’m planning to apply by fall this year and so I was wondering, even if I achieve a 4.0 at community college, will I still be too low to apply for comm? I know the 3.5 from cal poly is low but what if I get 4.0 through out my community college years?

also at my community college they do not offer all of the pre req for comm, and I have met with the advisor from UCLA and I have been told many time that it would not affect me much. however I’m freaking out cuz I read many post about comm majors at UCLA and how it’s so impacted to transfer in @@ so I’m working really hard to get all A’s right now. In this case, would it be better to go to another community college to finish whatever’s left for pre req or should I just stay at my current community college?
