UCLA Communication Studies / Cal Media Studies Transfer Chances?

So, i have a pretty unique situation as a transfer student. I attended UC Davis as a Communication major for my first year of college and accumulated a 3.8 GPA (major GPA: 4.0), and made it onto the Letters and Science Deans List for all 3 quarters. I had to leave Davis because I felt the school didn't really cater to the Communications department, didn't offer sufficient internships for Comm, and lastly my family was not able to afford sophomore year tuition. So now, I'm registered at my local CC as an Honors student in the TAP program.

I don't have too many EC's besides attending dance classes and working a few jobs throughout the year.
I'm currently a Public Relations intern at a well-known PR company in Downtown Los Angeles, and I plan on getting another PR/Comm. related internship throughout sophomore year.

I'm aware that the Comm. majors at UCLA and Cal are INCREDIBLY impacted and my overall GPA isn't as high as the accepted avg (3.92).

Do I still have a chance?
Also, does UCLA/Cal care more about my major GPA or Overall GPA?
Lastly, will UCLA consider the fact that my GPA isn't as high as the GPA of other transfer students, because UC Davis classes tend to be more challenging than CC classes and I also had to adjust to living on my own, etc?

Thanks!

You shouldn’t have a problem. You’ll probably be able to maintain a 4.0 at CC. Plus you have the internship. My daughter got into UCLA’'s Comm Studies this fall. She had two internships in PR (a small environmental start-up and an indie film publicity co). Your internship is great, and your Davis grades very good. You should not have any difficulty (although Comm Studies is excluded from UCLA’s TAP program, so you don’t need to do it. My daughter didn’t).

Be aware UCLA has added a questionnaire and a project that needs to be submitted with the application, starting fall 2015.

My daughter also took a Stanford Continuing Studies course on Media Crisis Management (half day) and joined the PRSSA, a national PR association for students. Both are small and mostly irrrelevant, but they show commitment to the major. They really like seeing that, so maybe look for something like that. She also got on the board of the associated students at her CC (super easy).

I’m surprised you said that about UCSD’s Comm dept. I thought it was supposed to be good.
