I was wondering which classes/requirements can be taken care of for a CSE major through these AP Classes (the website is very ambiguous on these specific ones)
1. AP Calc BC (Is it 31A and 31B, or just 31A?)
2. AP Chem (Is it Chem 20A?)
3. AP Bio (Is it the life science requirements?)
4. AP Stats

Also, for the other AP exams that I take, does the credit elevate me to sophomore standing if I get 48+ credits total before entering UCLA?
THANKS!!!!

I’m assuming you’re going to be in the school of engineering: http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/APCreditEN.htm

yes, if you have more than 48 AP Credits it elevates you to sophomore standing. This means slightly earlier class sign up times than those with freshman standing so generally a better choice of discussion times.

getting a 5 on AP Calc would get you out of 31A only
you cannot pass out of any chem classes
you cannot pass out of any life science classes
you cannot pass out of stats

unless it specifies a class/requirement, AP Credit does not replace a class. Any “general” or “unassigned” just means it counts as units towards academic standing, not for any class.

I was reading on an old forum from 2012 that an EE major was saying that BC got them out of 31A/31B and that chem got them out of Chem 20A. It will be troublesome if I can’t get out of those classes…
@picklesandtwigs, are you currently an engineering student at UCLA?

The most you can get out of is 5 classes. 5 on BC gets you out of Math 31A/B, 4 on either English gets you out of Eng Comp 3, 4 gets you out of Chem 20A, 4 on Mechanics (or 5? this one I’m not sure) gets you out of Physics 1A

Hey Darthpwner - I remember you from last year, but I may have you mixed up with someone else and I can’t figure how to search posters or anything on this forum since they updated it… Were you the one discussing about going to USC or UCLA then went to UCLA? (obviously)

Either way, wonder if you are happy at UCLA and if you have run into any difficulties that are worth mentioning? I have one strongly considering it for next year for CS. I am keenly aware that getting in is a crap shoot of course so not looking at that info, just wanted to hear from someone like you how it is going - I seem to remember you having a good head on your shoulders as ol’ timers say. Do you like your classes overall? Is going there a struggle everyday (not academically just in general) or is it a really pleasant place? Thanks for any insight if you don’t mind sharing.

Also, can I get out of the GE course “foundations of scientific inquiry life sciences” with credit from AP Bio?

Hi CADREAMIN, yes that was me who was deciding between USC and UCLA. I really like UCLA. It’s fun and a great academic experience. The only thing I don’t like is that the classes are really tough for me but that’s college and I have to get used to it haha. The education in Engineering is really top-notch here, you learn so much. There’s not really a struggle besides the classes because everyone there is really nice and friendly. It is a fantastic place in my opinion. I’m in Circle K, Club Tennis, and ACM so I really have a good time in those clubs. Definitely consider it for CS. The CS education here is extremely good and even though the learning curve is kind of tough when starting with C++, it definitely forms a good backbone to learn other languages. If your son/daughter/student got in, I would definitely recommend attending UCLA. It’s a great school to go to and for CA residents, a great deal financially.

That is the nicest email ever @Darthpwner, thanks for the reply. It is good to know you like CS there and get the feedback on it. I remember being bummed when you didn’t go to USC but UCLA is a great school too…Daughter will be applying to UCLA next year for CS. Fingers crossed for luck in this random admissions era (or so it seems from the acceptance and rejections). If I were to end up with one at UCLA I must confess, when it comes to sports, I am forever a Trojan fan. Hope you are enjoying the club tennis and wow, it sounds like you are involved so you found your groove there. Very happy you are so happy! I’ll be around through another application cycle. weeeee :)

This is the “useful” AP credit you’ll get if you’re an engineer:

5 on Calc BC - Math 31A and 31B (although you have the option to take 31B at UCLA if you don’t want to skip)
5 on Calc AB or 4 on Calc BC - Math 31A (although you have the option to take 31A at UCLA if you don’t want to skip)
4/5 on either English exam - English Composition 3 (Writing 1 requirement)
4/5 on Chemistry - You have the option to skip Chem 20A
4/5 on Physics C (Mechanics) - You have the option to skip Physics 1A

That’s all. Every passing score will give you units, but you won’t skip any classes with them. You cannot get any GE credit from AP exams if you are a HSSEAS student.

Hi @CADREAMIN thank you so much for all the advice last year and I love both schools so it was hard to pick just one. Best of luck to your daughter next year in applying to UCLA! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions :)

Thanks @Darthpwner, I may take you up on that. A bit off thread, but you going to the big match tomorrow? I guess it is in middle of day because of the broadcast…too bad for those that have class to attend! Ya know I have to say it…Fight On!

Just a clarification one of the points above. Engineers will only get credit for Math 31A for a 5 on Calc BC, not Math 31B.

AP Chem, AP BIO, AP STAT wont give you any credits. But they help you do Chem 14A, LS2, STAT10 well.

A 5 on AP Chem will give you credit for Chem 20A if you ask the department to give you credit for it. A ChemE friend of mine did that without any problems at all.

Alright everyone, thank you for the information. After getting detailed information from people currently in engineering (through this post) and talking to counselors (engineering open house), these are the credits that we get:
5 on Calc BC - Math 31AB (idk why this doesnt say so online, but this is the real deal)
5 on Calc AB/4 on Calc BC - Math 31A
4/5 on Lit/Lang - EngComp 3 (Writing 1 requirement)
3/4/5 on APUSH/AP Gov- American History Requirement fulfilled
4/5 on Chemistry - Chem 20A
4/5 on Physics C (Mechanics) - Physics 1A

You don’t actually get Math 31B credit with a 5 on the BC, but you do have the option to skip it if you want to. It’s specifically done that way to allow people who don’t want to skip 2 math courses the ability to take Math 31B without it counting on your transcript as an unapproved repeat. If 31B credit was posted to your record, then if you re-took 31B you wouldn’t get credit for the course you took at UCLA.

@CADREAMIN Nah I didn’t go because I had class at that time but USC was playing really well from what I heard. Should make for an interesting match up at the Pac-12 championships in Ojai!
