UCLA Engineering Likely Letters

We are nocal have not. D has stats to qualify for one but we are not so hopeful anymore because she also did not get anything from UCSD, UCD. Wait listed at both.

S got one last evening- Nor Cal. Mech E applicant. He has already been accepted to UCR-Regents, UCSB, UCSD, UCI, UCD… fingers crossed that this is a “likely letter.”

I am getting so worried because with a 2200 SAT, 4.3 GPA, over the top EC’s D has not gotten anything from any of the UC’s except the wait list.

Thanks, @ Sudsmom, Minnymom for responding.
I guess we have to wait and see.

@Sudsmom- what major did S declare? It is amazing the difference it makes in applying to UCs. CS, Chem E and BioE seem to be by far the most competitive. Good luck!

@ljmom-good luck as well.

@Minnymom - D declared BME at most places Chem at some. Maybe that is why but still her stats should get her in somewhere. She has Purdue but really wanted something more west coast. We were counting on the UC’s.

Thanks ljmom and Minnymom for your reply:)

I thought that ChemE & other Chem majors were only super competitive at Berkeley…

does the engineering letter they sent out yesterday correlate to a guaranteed acceptance?

Yes, the likely letters of all the previous years have meant acceptance. I will say the wording this year is lighter and up for a bit more interpretation but that may have been intentional. Last year’s letter left no doubt - it was a clear acceptance. But regardless of the wording, their intent has been the same for at least the last 5 years that I know of, they are an early admittance which is followed by the email later with everyone else. You can call that a guarantee but let’s face it, until you get the bright blue and yellow email in your inbox saying ACCEPTED there will be some doubt. But you should be feeling really good if you got one.

Cadreamin, it sounds like you are a UCLA engineering student. Don’t want to hijack the “likely” thread, but would love your feedback on how you like UCLA and class size and availability. My son got the letter everyone is discussing and also just interviewed for a Presidential scholarship at USC, so we may need to be doing a comparison between the two. Thanks.

@tortoni - Actually my S turned down UCLA and went to USC. But it was close - we bought 4 UCLA shirts at the engineering open house last year sure he was going to go there, but in the end it was USC all the way. I have a couple more coming down the college runway so I stay in tune with UCLA because they are interested in it (we may be a house divided :slight_smile: ). It was important to be able to move easily between engineering majors and it not cost extra time or be stressful to do that or get classes. That was probably the determining factor in the end. For us it was the right choice, and truth is we like the benefits of private schools, ya know, less struggle overall, alumni network, those type of things. There is the rivalry of course, but both are great engineering schools. The Presidential scholarship should make it easy, but it depends on your student’s priorities I suppose. Feel free to PM me if you can do that and I’ll share what I know. Perhaps we should move this to a USC thread!

@Sudsmom
I’m surprised that UCSD didn’t accept your D. Normally, at UCSD/UCD, if you’re not accepted to an impacted major, they will accept you to a non-competitive major or undeclare. What’s your D’s alternate major at UCSD/UCD? I saw your D’s stat on SLO’s thread and they are amazing. Do you think maybe your D is missing some required a-g courses? Anyway, there’s a kid that was rejected from SLO but got the likely letter, so there’s still hope.

@2018dad thanks for your kind words. We are looking to see what/if she is missing, school counselor is also helping us. We ‘think’ she put environ eng. Sometimes luck comes to play in these things too. Sigh. We did let her do her apps all on her own and did not proof anything. But yes we are trying to look for reasons!!

@sudsmom I also was wait listed at UCSD I have a little lower gap and test scores but very good EC’s. Here is the link if you would like to compare http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1601533-chance-me-for-my-schools.html#latest</a>
Very nervous about UCLA and Berkeley now.

@sudsmom – what was your daughter’s unweighted GPA? It seems like it is much harder to get accepted with a 3.8 than with a 4.0.

This whole thing is making me worry (Chemical Engineering) :frowning: Haven’t gotten a letter and UCLA is my top choice. Was it true that only about 40% of admitted engineers received the letter? I’ve already been admitted to UCD, UCSD and UCI honors program, but UCLA is really the one I am after.

Let’s hope the best, and good luck to everyone else!

Son received his letter tonight at 9:17. General engineering. 2100 sat, 33 act, 3.96 un, 4.3 uc… Good luck

Who else here is Computer Science Engineering (CSE)

@parkreation are you sure the mail is sent to 40% of the engineering students? Because only 2 from my school got it and at least 30 have applied. Also, on average 15 students are admitted for engineering… I think it is a much lower percentage, or maybe lower for internationals…

Hi Everyone … not to sound entitled, but I was invited to apply for UCB and UCLA Regents’, but I haven’t gotten the UCLA likely letter. I applied to engineering. :(
