UCLA Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

My major is eco, but I do not have work experience related to economics, does it matter?

I am a potential Econ/Biz econ applicant. By the end of my fall semester, I will have over 60 units done with a 4.0 GPA. (IGETC is done) All of my prereqs will be done except I will have to take Calc 2 in the Spring. I was curious if this kills my chance at UCLA. I know they offer contracts where students have to finish a class in spring for a certain grade but I am not sure if Calc 2 is a class that admissions would need to see a grade for before they accept me. I know that econ/biz-econ are impacted majors, which is why I am curious if anyone has had experience with the situation I am in now. I have 9/10 essays and OK EC. I had a full-time job throughout my classes at CC/high school. Not to get to specific but I am a seventeen-year-old who had to leave high school a year early with the CHSPE exam in order to support my family who fell on hard times. I am just really worried about having to take Calc 2 in spring and if this kills my chances. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I absolutely had to, I could take a super accelerated calc 2 class in a one-month intercession before spring. I really would prefer not to as it meets four times a week and I would struggle to process that much information in such a short time frame.

See my Berkeley comment. Ditto.

@Ohm888 I’m expected to boost my GPA from a 3.76 to a 3.87 after this semester assuming I get all A’s (I’m taking 10 classes/30 units). Will this look great on my application? I’m also co-operating a clothing business, helping aunt’s daycare business, and supporting my other aunt’s souvenir business on the weekends.

I’m applying for Business Economics for UCLA and Business Administration for UC Berkeley (You respond on both threads so I’d like your opinion using both of these majors as a reference since I don’t want to unnecessarily repeat myself  ).

I’m so excited to see this thread. I’m anxious about transferring, and UCLA is my first choice. I’ll share my stats: chance me?

Major: Psych
GPA: 4.0 over 90 UC units
Major Prep: 4/5 done in fall 5th in spring
IGETC: yes/done
ECs: Work 45 hours between two jobs, volunteer for Crisis Text Line, CC psychology club, high school ECs from 2013 or earlier (french club, Kiwanis, Natural Helpers)

Other:
2 Ws not related to major (scheduling- should i make a note of it?)
1/2 asian, first generation on mothers side, mother has died, financial hardships (aka plenty of things I’ve gone through and grown from that I’ve written about in my PIQs)
Financially independent and 24 yo

Going to a PIQ one-on-one at my CC as well as one at UCLA so I’m hoping they’ll be great!

Hi @coolcat212 I went to transfer day and the admissions people said multiple times that IGETC is not required and to focus on major prep! However, they said it is really beneficial for you, so that you don’t have to worry about gen eds after you transfer.

omg, you’re putting the Berkeley Summer Experience as an Ec or Award… which one??? I am so proud to have attended it myself but have no idea where to put it on my app!!!

^^^ Educational opportunity or whatever it’s called. The first listing.

@eager1beaver I think your app is pretty sharp. I would make a note in the little box they give you towards the end to explain the W’s. At the Berkeley Summer Experience they said they’re not necessarily concerned about W’s but they do like to see a reason for it.

Hey y’all, Fall 2018 UCLA transfer student here to help out:

Major: Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics, Minor: Biomedical Research
GPA of application: 3.93
ECs listed on application: Tutoring, playing video games (csgo, league of legends [no joke]), caring for my brother, tutoring, playing piano
Personal Statement: 7/10, since I kinda BS’d it and wrote like an 8-year-old learning something “cool” when it really wasn’t.

Pro tips:

  1. Don't listen to anyone who's not a successful UCLA transfer student. These college confidential people are crazy sometimes.
  2. Pm me any questions you have.
  3. https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major
  4. assist.org/■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■. I remember assist.org being outdated during my time of applying so idk about the reliability of assist.org now
  5. some courses in a sequence won't articulate over to UCLA correctly if you take them at different CCs so you'll have to petition once you're at UCLA.
  6. If you're a STEM major, you DON'T need to complete IGETC or complete ALL of your MAJOR requirements to get into UCLA. As long as you have most of the core classes and general eds completed and have shown that you can succeed academically (meaning have a high GPA), you can still get in.

My experience at UCLA:

Difficulty: CC was definitely harder (not a joke). Objectively, UCLA hands down surpasses my CC. But CC was where I forced myself to grow from the delinquent I sort of was in high school, so it was really hard for me.
Quality of Life: UCLA>CC
Quality of Sleep: CC> UCLA
Social: UCLA>CC
Means of transportation: My feet, Lyft/Uber, friend’s car, or FlixBus (~$15) if I want to go back home
Students: Aside from the UCLA girls being more attractive on average, I think the people at my CC were much more chill than the ones at UCLA. There are some really stupid, lazy, and cocky people here, even grad students.
Quality of Academics: UCLA>CC
Quality of teaching: CC>UCLA. Some UCLA professors CANNOT teach but pretend to teach and waste everyone’s time. I’d rather skip lecture than go to most of my UCLA classes (and watch the lecture via video so I can go at my own pace) but I can’t because these CENSORED grade ATTENDANCE.

Opportunities: UCLA>>>>>CC
Price: CC>UCLA (DUH)
Overall: UCLA>CC (but not by that much)

For those of you who are worrying about being a transfer student:

Do worry. It is definitely disadvantageous to be a transfer student in the long run (being 2 years behind other students who got in as freshmen), but you will have to make do with what you have. I don’t know if my weird chronological story will discourage or inspire people but I hope it does inspire (I will leave some personal things out because it’s too personal to discuss here):

-High school pseudo-drop-out, got into some colleges but didn’t like my major nor college nor financial aid package
-Opted for CC to try again but with more focus this time around
-Struggled pretty badly in CC cause of poor study habits and background knowledge, but I kept at it
-Took as many hard classes as I could to challenge myself
-Got some pretty bad grades in the beginning, but I slowly figured out how to do better
-Took botany and got my first B because it was boring, not hard (don’t take something that’s boring to you y’all cause it’ll be much harder than taking an objectively harder class that’s more fun). If the boring class is required, gg.
-Applied to UCs
-Applied to scholarships
-Got into UCLA, UCB, and UCD (the 3 schools I only applied to)
-Got a full-ride to UCLA so I opted for UCLA, though my UCB and UCD fin packages were good too
-UCD and UCB ain’t got a thing on the #1 public university, jk
-Doing research 1st quarter here (on Drosophila hematopoiesis under the MCDB department), was offered to work as an undergraduate research assistant in the medical genetics clinic of UCLA’s med school
-Involved in a good amount of activities around the school (got volunteer of the week out of hundreds of volunteers, including UCLA dental, medical, University of Washington optometrists, and doctors, recently for reasons idk [maybe I did a good job translating? Idek], just thought it’d be interesting to share and humbly brag about. Transportation and parent coordinator for a big event where hundreds of high school students from underserved areas will be brought to UCLA and taught about higher education).
-Recently talked to a Stanford undergrad, UCI Med school grad, and UCLA Med schoolfellow. She said the name of your school will only carry you so far. In the end, it’s up to you as a person to realize your goals, not your school. She admitted that someone from a Cal State school was far smarter than she was even though she went to Stanford, word.

The point is, don’t let the transfer stigma screw with you. Just be dedicated to your work and you’ll succeed, one way or another.

@filmlover98 I have a random question! I noticed you received the Moreno Valley Mayor’s award and I could not help but ask if you’re from RCC or MVC? If so did you take any classes with Tolunay for Psych?

Hey everyone! This is very important!

UC is extending the application deadline for those who are affected by the Southern California fires to December 15. You have to email them though and explain why you need the extension. Here’s the link below for more information and to follow instructions.
Please share this with anyone else you know who might be affected by the fires!

@AnhionringUCLA20 Hi again luv :3

Hello! I’m trying to transfer for UCLA’s Public Affair’s Undergrad Program. Can someone chance me?

I have diverse interests and with a passion for helping those affected by various disabilities, I could see each of these majors at these schools to be of use whether for city planning with an emphasis on accessibility, collaborating with tech giants to build new technology to improve overall health, or being able to prepare for law school.
