UCLA Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@sugarcane1 I am applying from community college but was at a private 4 year before the spring… And I ended up getting into USC but financial aid did not work out so not going to apply again.

My stats:
From a Los Angeles CCC

Major: 1) Human Biology and Society BA and Anthropology BA
GPA: 4.0
prereqs: DONE
Igetc: DONE
TAP: yes
Units by Spring 2019: 88 units

EC: 200+ hours of volunteering at hospital, 100+ hours of shadowing a DPM, 50 hours of shadowing at Emergency Room Doctor .

Schools Applying:
(UCs: UCLA, UC Berkely, UCSD, UCSB, UCI)
(CSU: CSUN, SDU, CSULB, Cal Poly SLO)
(Private: USC, Pitzer, Cornell)

Personal Statements:
In short they had themes of : The difficulties of being Middle Eastern and Gay with a sob story of I overcame those obstacles, Drag, and volunteering for elderly people with memory loss.

my primary major has 9% acceptance rate pray for me y’all. :’)

Forgot to add my stats here:

Major: Psychology

Pre-reqs: Done

IGETC: Done

TAP: Yes. Alt major: Linguistics and Psychology

GPA: 3.59 (should be 3.70 by the end of this semester)

UCs applied to: UCLA, Davis, Irvine, San Diego, and Riverside

ECS:

President of the AGS Honors Society at my college. Secretary for Girl Up! club (a program where we focus on educational awareness for girls in the middle east). Past senator for student government.

300+ Volunteering hours in AmeriCorps student ambassador program (UC application wouldn’t let me put 3 digits so I had to put the 52 maximum hours. haha). 2 year unpaid intern at a children’s global exchange program where they travel to another country. Currently paid intern for the American Federation of Teachers. Working part time as an English tutor at my school. Presented at UCLA for a research conference

Awards: 3 scholarships last year, and I added an achievement for winning this year’s NaNoWriMo (it’s not really an academic award, but I feel being able to write a complete novel with 50,000 words under one month might mean something to them hopefully, ).

Other things that might help: I took a Chicano studies class at UCLA over the summer since I’m part of the CCCP program and did SITE PLUS. I got a B from that class, so I have an established UC GPA of 3.0.

Personal statements:

Wrote about how I was mostly prepared for my psych major because of the UCLA research program I was in that allowed me to do research in my own field, which prepares me for the rigorous demands at the UC.

Wrote about my creativity in art and how I could apply ton my major with it by drawing workshops for students to cope with mental health.

Wrote how my experience in my 2 year internship has allowed me to become a leader

Last one was sort of difficult for me. I wrote about how my talent in writing allows me to be diligent, which sets me apart from other candidates, It was hard trying not to sound cliche ^^

Weakness:

I’m afraid my GPA wasn’t high enough for psych. Hoping TAP and that ULA class I took and help ^^;

@HeyItsNick nice you were accepted at USC but a drag the aid didn’t work out. Im sure you are not alone in that situation. Best of luck to you this round. Im sure you will end up at a great school!

Good luck!

@futurepa19 Its going to hurt really, really, bad that you have THREE major prep classes to complete in the spring. I was told by several UCLA reps that psych majors who have more than two major requirements to complete in the spring before transfer will be either be waitlisted or denied. This illustrates how impacted this major truly is. However, those who have only one major requirement to complete in the spring are fine.

Keep in mind, you are competing with others who have everything completed already.

@HarleyTheQuinn Hi, weren’t you in the 2018 thread as well? Lol. I feel like I saw your name in that thread when I was digging for advice in the summer. Are you applying again or something?

@8CLAP4SUP Hey it’s me again! Yep, I was there, too lol. I decided to stay another year to raise my GPA higher

@futurepa19 @8CLAP4SUP I disagree with that dire assessment. OP took calc 2, and calc 1 fulfills the stats req, although they prefer stats, which OP shows extra commitment in taking. They won’t count that as a missing course because calc 2 fulfilled it. So she’s missing Phil and bio. They can and might ask for the Phil grade after winter quarter. OP has a high GPA and related ECs and has a proven track record in math. I think OP stands a great shot.

GPA: 3.94
[ *] Job/Work Experience: I basically just work, no extracurriculars. Throughout my time studying I’ve averaged between 25-35 hours a week working (I know that extracurriculars are important but I basically hit the ground running when I decided to go back to school and only spent time working or studying)
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: 3 hours at a Seattle progressive feminist organization
[ *] Personal Statement: Extremely strong. I am a sexual assault survivor/victim who is working her butt off to pursue her goals.

[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[ *][ b] Intended Major [ /b]: Philosophy and Political Science
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): Washington
[ *] Country (if international applicant):
[ *] School Type: 2-4 Year Community College; Quarter System
[ *] Ethnicity: Asian
[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] Income Bracket: Bottom 10%
[ *] Hooks: First-generation college student; independent?

[ *] Strengths: I started school again in April of 2018 and am two quarters away from attaining my associate’s.
[ *] Weaknesses: I took a few years off after my sexual assault and failing a few classes.

Hey guys! Anyone know if I have a good chance? Thanks!

Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.88 (All A’s 1 C in gen ed class, will probably go down bc B in physics this semester) (62 units done at end of fall, 80 by end of spring)
Major GPA: 4.0 (Will probably go down, B in physics)
Major prep: done by spring 2019 (1 left, philosophy)
IGETC: done
TAP: nah

Applying to: UCLA, UCB, UCI (TAG), UCSD, and maybe USC

EC: Not much, Link Crew Leader in high school, work as an AVID Tutor at a middle school, had to take care of younger sibling due to family issues in high school.

Essays:

  1. for the required transfer essay, I discussed how my interest in psych started when I took AP psych my senior year of hs, saw the concepts can be applied everywhere. Able to apply them as a tutor, I majored in psych so I could help people and become a school counselor.

  2. Leadership topic, wrote about being an AVID tutor. It was more focused on the relationships I made with students, which influenced them to become better individuals. Not everything is about grades and helping them, but see them grow all together.

  3. Educational opportunity. Wrote about starting community college during winter of senior year. Took a humanities class which opened my eyes and enlightened me, jump start on college too lol.

  4. Talked about my mom passing away my freshman year of hs. A lot of responsibilities at home, but never missed a day of school. Had counseling sessions for help, and continued taking rigorous honors/AP classes, which gave me the strong work ethic for my classes in college.

Good luck to everyone

I think you’ve got a decent shot @chez59.

Hey thanks for your response, @Cayton. I’m kinda worried about my EC’s and psych is such a competitive major. I actually forgot to put taking care of my sibling in the EC section, but I mentioned it in my essays. Hopefully my essays were good enough to set me apart. Guess we’ll have to wait until spring to find out

Hey guys, been following these threads for about 3 years now so excited that it’s finally my time to post.

@Romeo233 Definitely a high chance of getting in. Also nice to see another psych major on here

@HarleyTheQuinn Thank you! Good luck to you hopefully we both get in to a very selective major.

@Ohm888 Hi there. I am only going based off of what several UCLA admissions officers and representatives told me this summer while I was there for CCCP. Btw, do you mind looking over my stats and chancing me please?

Hi!
Major: Economics
First year student, but I took 10 AP tests in high school, so I have 60 quarter units from that. After this fall semester I have 57 transferable semester units. After spring semester, I will have 73 transferrable semester units, and if we count my nontransferrable work classes, I have 79 semester units.

4 major prep classes required - Calc 1 and 2, and Macro and Micro Econ
Grades:
Summer - English 1A online: A , 5 quarter units
Fall:
English 1B Honors, 8 week: A, 3 semester units
CS 36: B, 3 semester units
Calc 2: A, 5 semester units
(got a 4 on AP calc AB in high school)
Microecon: A, 4 quarter units
A class where I get credit for my corporate job, 2 semester units, doesn’t transfer to UC schools
My GPA including the class that doesn’t transfer: 3.842
My GPA without that class: 3.82
Spring Semester:
Counseling Honors - 3 semester units
Bio 1 Honors - 3 semester units
Accounting 1A online - 4 semester units
Macroeconomics Honors - 3 semester units (only major prep class I’m taking in the Spring, but I did pass AP Macro but my AP score doesn’t count as a major prep requirement)
Business Law Honors - 3 semester units
Class getting credit for corporate job - 4 semester units

IGETC - complete after spring (just waiting on Bio)
Major Prep - complete after spring (only Macroeconomics)
Transfer Alliance Program - got permission to take 4 in the spring and one in the fall, will be given certification in February
Three jobs - a corporate one working about 20 hours per week, a city job working about 8 hours per week, and a job with my school working 6 hours a week on my student government’s budget and finance committee. I also had 1000 hours of community service in high school and still volunteer.

Hey guys! Please Chance me !
Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.88
Major GPA: 4.0
(Pre-Reqs and IGETC are finished)
EC’s: UC Berkeley Summer Experience Program, UCR Future Physicians Leaders (Health project), UCR School of medicine conference, President/Coach of Speech and Debate team, Suicide Awareness Campaign team leader, President/creator of Club Hope (cancer awareness), STEM tutor, freelance videographer and photographer, Chem Club, Honors Program, YAC for Riverside County, Mayor recognition reward, Directing Change Film winner, 1st place AKA oratorical contest, AP scholar, Magna Cum Laude, etc.
PIQ’s: (I feel pretty confident about my PIQ’s because I had a UC Berkeley admission officer read them and said they were strong. I also had multiple Professors go over them .)

  • I wrote about my immigration story, and my fight against the negative stigma associated with mental health because of suicides of family members and a friend. I also wrote about my community health project informing local college students on nutrition, and how I demonstrated leadership through a club I created based on cancer awareness.

Hey!
Major: Architecture
GPA: 3.66
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Finished
Major Prep: Not Finished
HTP: Yes
TAP: Yes
EC’s: 2 Month Long Internship, AGS (national honor society) Member, MECHA Member, HTP Chair, Solid Volunteer Work, HTP Research Conference
PIQ’s: I’d rate two of them a 9/10 and the other two 8/10. I thought overall that section of my application was pretty strong.
-I wrote about my internship and how that prepared me for my major; I wrote how I lost a ton of weight and how my health and weight was the most difficult challenge I have overcome; I wrote how my volunteering with a nearby elementary school allowed me to better my community; lastly I wrote how my involvement with my church’s music group was an opportunity to help resolve an issue or take leadership.
*My major requires a supplemental application which I’ve heard to be the most important part of my application and I think mine is solid but I don’t really know what they’re looking for so if anyone knows or is also an Architecture Transfer please let me know what you included in your portfolio!
Please chance me honestly, thanks!
