UCLA, Film & Television, and General Questions

Hello. I was wondering if anyone here has applied to UCLA's Film and Television program and was able to answer as much of these questions as possible regarding it.

1) I am aware of it's extremely low admit rate due to its extremely competitive nature with the low number of spots and high number of applicants. I also know that when you apply for this major, they ask you not to put a second one / back up. Can you still be rejected, but be accepted into UCLA as a different major? (Other majors I'm interested in are Asian American Studies and Theater)

2) It says on their website that no prior experience is necessary. Regardless, is it still possible that one's chances of acceptance increases with the experience / film classes on transcript / etc.?

3) I completed four years of French in high school and had grades sufficient enough to pass them. I know by presenting this transcript, I could bypass the language requirement (is that correct? If not, forget this question). However, the website has this:

"Students may meet the foreign language requirement by 1) scoring a 3, 4, or 5 on the Advanced Placement AP foreign language test in French, German, or Spanish; 2) presenting a UCLA foreign language proficiency examination score indicating competency through level three; or 3) completion of one college level foreign language course equivalent to UCLA's level three or higher, minimum grade of C."

I did not meet 1 and I'm pretty sure I haven't met 2, and I'm assuming with 3, I'd have to take another language course up to level three in CC. Is this correct or am I just going too far into this?

4) What were your back up / other choice schools? UC or non UC.

5) Has anyone here successfully been admitted into this major at UCLA? I'd like to hear about your experience / tips / etc. if any, as well as extra requirements that may be easily overlooked.

Other notes: It is only my first year in CC so I'm not applying this year, but I would like to know ahead of time so I'm more prepared come next November. I am following the IGETC as well as taking all Film related classes my CC offers after I complete it.

That's all the questions I have for now. Thank you for your time!

No. I applied as Films, but switched it as soon as I realized how competitive it really was.

Yes. While they say that you don’t need prior, that’s a MINIMUM requirement. While this isn’t a high school level admission, you’ll still compete against some of the most colorful individuals for films. If you have a portfolio of past film works you’ve done or internship, that would be a plus. This is an extremely competitive major, so be prepared to provide as much portfolio-information as possible.

Yes, you’re fine. I took Japanese 1-3 throughout my years in CC. If you did up to French 3, it makes up for the rest. Don’t panic about that.

USC, UCSD, UCSB, UCI, UCB, UCSC.

Not me, as you can see haha ;)

*If you do intend on pursuing the film major, be prepared to turn in all the extra bit for them on time.

Cool, thanks!

Bump — hoping to get more insight from others and possible alternatives, advice, etc.

hmm portfolio? i have heard about that for a few times now, on the website it doesnt indicate anywhere to include a portfolio…how do you submit one?
