I'm going to attend UCLA college of L&S in Fall 2010, and I'm wondering what the best housing option is for me. I'm thinking of either getting into a Residential Hall or Plaza.

Also, where are there piano practice rooms? And kitchens? (Which halls?) Are there any?

Thank you!
Mindy :)

Personally, I’d go with halls for the social experience (living with the tight quarters for a year > not getting the hall experience)

First of all, have you read the permanent thread on housing? It’s at the top of the opening page under Hot Topics and is called “read this before starting a new housing thread”. Lots of great info. In a nutshell, plaza rooms tend to be a slight bit larger then res hall rooms. The plaza rooms either have private bathrooms or share with the room next door. So depending on the situation you will share a bathroom with somewhere between 2 and 5 people. The bathrooms are large with a separate closed door area for the toilet area and the shower area. So multiple people can be using the space at the same time with some privacy. Plaza rooms tend to be a bit quieter because you only have a few rooms per floor and people aren’t back and forth sharing the communal bathrooms and such. The plazas can be social and fun but they are better of you want a bit more quiet and privacy.

Res halls are high rise buildings with many rooms per floor and communal bathrooms on each floor. They tend to be very social as you really get to know your floor mates when you are standing next to them as you brush your teeth. People keep their doors open a lot at the beginning of the quarters to invite visitors and aid in making friends. The res halls are the most traditional type of dorm set up. Although they take getting used to after having your own room at home many people love the experience for freshman year.

Keep in mind that when you request plaza or res hall it is only a request. Many people do not get what they request. Keep an open mind and plan to be flexible and make due with whatever you get freshman year. You have more say and better priority in getting housing the next year.

Sproul and Rieber (both res halls) will be good choices for you, though I doubt you will get them since many upperclassman are staying there next year. Dykstra (another res hall) is old, but its pretty social which is good. Its also close to campus so thats another plus. I think there is a piano room in Sproul and Rieber. I know there is one in Hedrick but that doesn’t matter since they’re closed for next year. De Neve might have a piano room. De Neve is a plaza, so that means private bathrooms, bigger rooms, and air conditioning, but also more money and a less social floor.

My guess is that the freshman are going to be in those 4 dorms mainly. It’s ultimately what you prefer- if small rooms and communal bathrooms are too much of a problem, then request a plaza. Your social life won’t be doomed if you’re in a plaza, but you will probably make more friends in a res hall (just because you see each other more and because there are more people on res hall floors). If you think you can handle small rooms and communal bathrooms, then definitely go for a res hall. There is nothing like the first year res hall experience. I promise, it is easy to get used to it. It isn’t as bad as you would think. I wasn’t looking forward to being in a res hall, but I got used to having a small room and using the communal bathrooms for a week. And it also makes your room back at home seem much more amazing when you go back home :)

Heyyy mindy :D

Me and kk requested res hall. I think you should just live in a res hall the first year and then if you don’t like it you can move up to a plaza the next year. You’ll meet a lot more ppl in a res hall since you’re going to be seeing everyone a lot more. I mean you HAVE to go out of your room to satisfy your biological needs lol. Then once you have some solid friends and such you can just pick one or two and go for a plaza next year if you like. And yeah read the stickies housing thread. It’s massive but it has everything
