Thanks for the info raiders97! I can sleep SLIGHTLY better now
im so nervous!
My extracurriculars are mostly speech and debate/piano, so I don’t really know my chances

Last year Will Herrera didn’t send out rejections letter until a week into the start of the program, if I remember correctly. And everyone got the email, including accepted and currently participating people. Hopefully it’ll be a bit more organized this year. He did push the app deadline up, so that will help.
I’d also recommend calling him versus emailing - he gets a large volume of emails a day and hence takes forever to reply.

When is it going to come??!!!

Can someone please clarify what being initially selected entitles? The email was extremely ambiguous

Hey all,
@socal599 yes you if u say you want to, then you will get in. Essentially, being initially selected means you’re top 60 applicants (excluding rising juniors who are getting it after spots are declined)
Got accepted into tech camp and still waiting for HSSRP as I am a rising junior.
Does anyone happen to know tech camp acceptance rate btw? Also, I don’t live in LA so finding housing is going to be a pain :/

I really hope they don’t wait until June to email the rest of us such a long wait…

Has any initial selection student received any confirmation yet?

Nope, not yet.

Haven’t got a confirmation yet, and thanks for the clarification!

I just posted this in the other HSSRP thread:

I just got my acceptance notification…not sure whether I should go to HSSRP or RISE though, since I’m not sure whether I want to go college in the NE or the West

Decisions, decisions

tTorque, are you a rising senior?

as for your double acceptance, I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy either camp!

Yes, I am a rising senior. I suppose they started compiling the list 4/18 but are still doing so now. Funny thing is they’re giving me until tomorrow to make up my mind

I’m sure I would! I suppose that since I could attend HSSRP as a commuter, it’d be better, but I think I’d prefer NE over Cali (slightly). Oh well

Hi,

Did any other initial acceptances not receive a unique follow up email for a final acceptance offer?

I’m somewhat confused as to what the process is. I received a notice of being an initial selection, which I replied to declaring interest.

The next email I received is the general email sent to all applicants this May 1st. This email says that all accepted students have been notified.

Can we assume that all initial selections, unless otherwise notified, were accepted? Or is it the other way around, in that all initial selections, if they did not receive additional email, can assume that they were not chosen as final selections?

Thanks

Hey Draconic,

From reading other posts about HSSRP and the information in the general email I received (which you PMed me about), initial selection seems to guarantee a spot if you express interest.

Ah, thanks tTorque.

So, just to relieve any outlying worries, aside from the initial selection email, (“Congratulations _____/ The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science is happy to announce that you have made it as an initial selection to participate in the 2013 High School Summer Research Program”) and the general email sent at 6:43 today (“Thank you for submitting your application for the 2013 UCLA High School Summer Research Program. In total, we received 300 applications”), you didn’t receive any other emails from them confirming that a faculty member selected you as an accepted initial selection?

Thanks again,

Well, of course, I just received my initial selection today, but from the sound of the general email, it says that “those initial selections have already received an e-mail from William Herrera. Initial selections will have until Wednesday May 8, 2012 to reply and secure their 2013 HSSRP slot” and that “Unfortunately, we are going to have to extend our final notification deadline to Friday May10, 2013.”

Meaning that they could not keep up with all the selections and therefore are postponing the notifications

Ah thanks.

My concern primarily stems from having written my personal statement about a somewhat controversial and politicized topic that might have been more suitable for an adcom than a faculty member. But, I’ll see soon enough and will probably call Mr. Herrera to confirm at some point in the near future.

Does anyone else seem to be in a similar situation as me?

I don’t think you should worry about your personal statement. It’s whatever you wanted to say personally, and they were also kind of vague about exactly what to put on there anyway.

My friend, who also applied to HSSRP, got an initial selection email from Mr. Herrera but the email wasn’t for her…? As in it said

“Congratulations, [name]!”

But the name wasn’t the name of my friend that received the email.

I wonder how many other people out there are facing this dilemma.

Well, that just seems really awkward
