This year will be my last year at a CC here in California. Now I’ve been putting a lot of thought into where I will transfer to in Fall 2016. Now I have been working about 26-30 hours a week as a shift manager at a local fast food pizza place so I really haven’t had much time to get involved with Honors programs or really any extracurricular activities. I have a 3.4 after a rough Spring 2015 Semester however I plan to get that up to about a 3.6 or 3.8 by the time the end of my last semester comes around. Now I believe I have a decent shot at getting into UCI as an economics major which is by no means a negative situation to be in. However I have just learned that UCLA has a Math/Econ major that has a lower average GPA. A requirement for this major is that I need 4 semesters of Calculus before transfer, however by the end of Spring 2016 the max I could complete is Calc 1 and Calc 2. Now it says these courses are “required” for transfer, however Assist.org says that I should complete as many of these recommended courses as possible at my CC. Assist.org makes it sound as if these courses are not so much as required, more recommended before transfer. I guess what I’m asking is if there is a 100% chance of me being rejected from UCLA for not having those prerequisites? And hypothetically if I was accepted how hard would it be to change my major, while attending UCLA, to a straight Economics major. Like I said, I have a few backups that I could fall back on but I would just like to know if any of this is possible or if I’m SOL for UCLA.
For UCLA Math/Econ I would say, yes, it’s a near 100% rejection as it would be very hard for you to graduate “on-time” without the prerequisites completed. Math, like Econ, is one of those majors that basically needs you to have all prerequisites done to start taking the upper division courses which is what they expect from you as a transfer student.
Additionally, at UCLA you cannot change to an Economics major if you were not originally admitted as an Economics pre-major:
“You must be admitted directly into this major; you will not be able to change to this major after admission to UCLA.”

Take accounting classes this year and add UCSB Economics & Accounting to your list.
You can also just apply to UCLA with another major and go for the accounting minor but that is risky since it is competitive to get into.
I would still apply to UCLA & UCB as an Econ major and see how it goes.
I would also consider staying an extra year because it doesn’t look good to have both your Calculus in progress when you are applying this year.
I see. It was worth a shot to ask to be sure. I don’t really want to waste another year at CC considering I would’ve already been there for 3 by the end of the Spring 2016 semester. I get my AA this semester in Business Administration and I kind of want to transfer ASAP. At least I can just apply as an econ major but with my stats I don’t think I’d fair well against the competition. What could I improve on from now until Spring 2016 that could give me a shot?
1.) Finish as many pre-reqs as possible and get all A’s.
2.) Work on your extracurricular and your personal statement. Make sure they are eye popping.
3.) Pray
