UCLA meal plan question

Hi, I am still deciding on my meal plan for the upcoming year. I am a bit confused though. Most people have said to get the 14p but I dont see the advantage of getting that meal plan when the 19G is about $350 cheaper and you get 150 meals extra (over the year). I know that there are specific meal times but it cant be THAT inconvenient, can it?

Am I thinking about this the wrong way?

I have 14p now btw but would like to save some money if possible. Anybody with experience with either 14P or 19G have any input???

14P is for people who plan to eat two times a day at UCLA, or possibly even less if they want to go elsewhere to eat from time to time. 14P meal swipes roll over into following weeks if they aren’t used in the previous week. Rolling over isn’t a privilege that you get with the 19G plan. With the 19G plan, you’re expected to eat 3 times a day on the weekdays and two times a day on the weekends. Those meal swipes don’t roll over if you don’t use them, so it’s kind of limiting.

Personally, I chose 19P, because it’s really, really flexible and I tend to eat two meals a day with a snack here and there, but 14P should be fine for you if what I wrote earlier applies to you.

Thank you for the reply!

Follow up: What’s so great about the “roll-over”? Say you have 30 “rolled over” swipes at the end, dont they just go to waste anyways? Can you do anything with them?

It’s great if you just want to eat more, or if you want to get snacks and not meals. Also, you can use these swipes to allow your friends/family to eat with you if they’re visiting.

You can use leftover swipes to make friends :)

^This guy gets it. :D

I think im going to switch to 19G. I still dont get why people are paying MORE for LESS. If friends/family came , I wouldn’t take them out for dorm food anyways…thx tho

Are you sure it’s cheaper and 150 extra meals because it doesn’t make sense. Why?

I know @DrGoogle‌, I think they’re analyzing it in a way we wouldn’t. They save, let’s say, 50 cents per meal by buying 19 over 14 but they’re paying more a month, so the UC is getting more money. And then I always read about the roll-overs never used. It’s a win for UCLA.

I set my daughter up on the 11 plan because I really doubt she’s going to be eating in the dorms day after day. I can always pony up if needed.

The 19G is less because they know you are going to lose a bunch of meals. The meal periods are awkward for a reason.

Wait, you mean there are only certain times you can eat?

Yeah you can only swipe in once during a “meal period” on the non “P” meal plan. With P, you could use 5 swipes at once whenever you want.

The meal periods are: 7a-11a, 11a-5p, 5p-10p, 10p-12a, 12a-2a.

Those don’t seem too awkward. I think for guys it’s more of an issue than with girls, as guys eat more.

Wait! Is that sexist? :-bd

Well, the government recommends that men consume more calories than women, and men are heavier, so…

The meal times aren’t bad except probably the main times you’ll be eating you can only swipe twice over ten hours. So no extra smoothies lol.

That meal schedule schedule pretty much guarantees that many students with the 19g will end up spending extra money on snacks.

I’m no Econ major, but I can’t help but think UCLA comes out on the winning end with these 19Ps. Maybe not for everybody because some will use it a lot, but the majority won’t manage it to their advantage. UCLA always considers the bottom line.

@lindyk8‌

You’re probably right. I’m not certain I’ll use all of my swipes on the 19P plan, but the great thing is that even if you don’t use up all of your swipes, you still had the flexibility to do so anytime in the quarter, and not just on actual meals.

I suppose UCLA benefits more from the deal than I do, but I like to think that this is a win-win for everybody on the 19P plan, myself included.

Of course, if I’m not satisfied with the plan, I can just change it for a small fee.

That’s the thing. You can always change. My daughter might change later from the 11cub (love that word!) if she feels it would be more beneficial.
