UCLA Orientation Exposed!

can u post an image of the printed schedule??? thanks a lot for all the info

thinkgolden im a phil major too…what classes did u pick?

Longest. Day. Ever.

@edelynly you are a Psych major right? Did you have trouble enrolling in your classes? What Psych classes did you enroll in? Most have prereqs…

it took me 2 hours to enroll in econ classes

what were you doing for 2 hours?

the only important parts of the day for me:

7:30 am check in:
get free breakfast, true bruin backpack, pen, true bruin pin, a book called “Zeitoun” that apparently everyone has to read, and folders with useful info

7:30 - 8:30:
get your bruincard if you haven’t already

8:30 - 10:30:
pointless introductions, but go to these if you must

11-12:
meet your student adviser for lunch who will answer any questions and also give you your “degree in progress report,” this is very helpful and has A LOT of information about your current progress towards graduating and fulfilling your major requirements, you’re probably thinking “wait i haven’t even started at ucla yet, so how can they have so much info about me?”

1:30 meet with head advisers from your major department and ask them questions about your major

…everything from 2:30-7:50 PM is pretty pointless imo because it’s been stressed on so much they’ll be touched on again throughout the quarter (honors program, fin aid, research opportunities, study skills, etc), a lot of people used this time to go to computer labs around the dorms and plan out their classes which you’ll sign up for at 8:00 sharp in your student advisers dorm room, after which you’ll just go home

*I recommend

 • having your classes planned out before your orientation WITH BACKUPS because you WILL NOT get your first choice
 • ask as many questions as you can
 • keep in touch with your student adviser
 • have him/her show you the various resources such as computer labs, free printing, etc around campus while you’re walking from orientation to orientation
 • get your free dinner pass around 5pm, the dorm food is soooo goood!

I am not a psych major! But HEY. Don’t worry. I was nervous all night and day but my departmental counselor seriously saved my life. (The meeting with my dept. counselor was probably the only thing that made going to orientation worthwhile.) If you really, really, really need a course (for example, they only offer a certain class Fall quarter and you absolutely have to take it for whatever reason), your counselor will most likely give you a ‘PTE’ code to add it. Also, the rumor that some of the more impacted courses have ‘secret’ spots for some incoming students is true. Having that said, I did not get into most of my first-choice courses. It did mess up my plans a bit, but overall I’m satisfied with what I got.

It took me about twenty minutes to sign up for classes (no crashing). You are taken to your orientation counselor’s room at Rieber Terrace at the end of the day for some lame presentation and to sign up for classes (exactly 8 on the dot). Bring your own laptop so you don’t have to wait for everyone else to sign up. The wifi worked surprisingly well and the facility is amazing. The double room is a bit smaller than I expected but it’s big enough to have two people sleep over on the ground.

Um, other things…

If you plan on getting there a bit late, aim for somewhere between 8:30-9. I arrived at around 10:30 and had a pretty difficult time trying to figure out where to go (they move locations). If you do end up arriving after 9, you have to call some number to ask where everyone is. Going earlier will just make things easier for you. I did miss out on the majority of the morning presentations (all information you should already know) and for that I was glad.

Instead of going to the workshops (unless they really do interest you, but they’re just all BS), I suggest checking out where your potential fall classes might be, checking out the library, going to the store, play hide and go seek by yourself. Don’t bother walking to the dorms, though. You’ll be there at the end of the day and will regret if you visit twice. Unless you want a good workout. Oh, and wear comfortable clothes. Some girls were wearing heels what the ****.

What they say about UCLA having good-looking people is not true from what I saw today. Not a good representation but that’s my first impression. Sorry.

This is too long. That’s all I can think of for now. :)

I HATE when girls wear heels to anything school related. I never got the whole fancy heels on campus thing. I wore the baggiest clothes and ****iest shoes last semester.

Oh! And @shawneee, my orientation counselor said that some courses are more strict with prerequisites than other courses. It shouldn’t be so bad because they know they haven’t received all your transcripts yet. You just have to play around with URSA and the enrollment site.

@framlove - Haha, right? I stick with hoodies, jeans, and sandals year-round. Hahaha. So bum.

thank you so much for your info! I have prob 5 or 6 classes in mind and no joke 5 out of 6 are full. :-/ The majority of the Psych classes have prereqs and the ones that don’t are full…

have a great night!

i feel bad for the latter people that going to 202 and above because there’s simply not many class that they can choose from. I major in pol sci and i BARELY register for 1 major class.

The others are either full or they require professors permission… or simply time conflicting. The upper div electives that are available now are… not very interesting.

You guys prolly hear lots of ppl complaining some people got out like 930 or 10pm and waiting 1 to 2 hours to register because the system is crazy. The whole thing is just… weird and confusing and time consuming.

Thank you all soooo much for all of the information and a picture too!!! I’m super glad that none of my classes are even close to being full!^-^

oh…edit. To the person hating on the heels, lol. Once your feet get used to heels (no matter how bad for your back they might be) you can’t stop wearing them! Happened to me fall semester. Whenever I would try to wear flats or tennis shoes for whatever reason, the pain was so great that I rather go barefoot, haha! I’m back to flats! But I do miss being able to withstand long periods of time with heels! =/

@antothesky- if you are only taking 1 class for your major what other classes are you taking? I just looked through the whole schedule & each class that looked interesting was either- a) for frosh/ soph only or b) or majors/ minors only c) full or d) has a prereq that I haven’t met! This should be fun!

what are all these classes you guys speak of that are already full??? Because as a biz econ major i’d assume my classes would be all full but they’re actually a good amount of spots left. Am I looking in the wrong place?

i didnt read read over this to much but i dont think any south campus (sciency majors)got represented… so heres the gist… SET YOUR CLASSES BEFORE TIME AND MAKE ALTERNATE SELECTIONS… we have tons of prereqs for each class and unless the later sessions are not like ours then they will not be cleared. What this means is that you will sit in a room with your group and your counseler will call the counseling department to clear you for the class. This takes a long ass ****ing time. I waited 4ish hours. Anyway, make alternate schedules of classes and dont be surprised if you can only get 1 or 2 classes that go to your major. Personally, I got 2 major classes and 1 for “fun” class. I was a success story in a way. And I did early arrival too so thats just a tour of westwood which is pretty chill too. I would recommend it if you aren’t down to drive early

Just wait until ever student finishes their second pass (See [UCLA Schedule of Classes: Enrollment Appointments](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/soc/enrollappt.htm) ), then there will be very slim pickings.

201 was lucky because they got to sign up for more classes than the regular students. The regular students only got to sign up for 10 units so far. In 203, I am screwed. I sign up after everyone’s had their first and second passes.

Phil 100A, Phil 22, Latin 1, Comm St 104, Mil Sci 21, Mil Sci Z

@ thinkgolden- what is military science? rotc? that looks like a pretty full schedule!

@ 1net- I’m a psych major and those are the classes I am referring to when I say they are full…

I wouldn’t mind retaking chemistry & all those classes are almost full. & I’ve already taken 20A at community college so I am not sure they’ll let me restart in the 14 series. I am thinking of going to grad school for nutrition or health psych so I hope they let me go into the chem classes…

czone- do you know if non south campus majors can enroll in chem?

does anyone know if there is anyway at all to get into a class that is already “closed”???

what about those “secret spots?”
