UCLA Psych Majors

Hey guys. I just went to the orientation the other day and met with one of the psych department counselors. They are pretty strict. You have to take Psych 100 A this fall and one other upper division psych class. You are not allowed to take any additional psych classes this quarter or she will drop you from all of your classes. She told us that she already dropped all the classes at one girl from the first orientation.

Also I don't know if she really means this but she told us anyone who doesn't attend the orientation (just the departmental part) you will never, ever be able to see a psych counselor during your time at UCLA.

Hope this helps.

thanks! 10char

That seems so extreme!
I was about to cancel my orientation session because my friend went last year and said it was the most pointless day he’d ever spent and its going to be difficult for me to make travel arrangements. Plus, my session is really late so its not like I have the advantage of registering as early as possible.
Do you think the Psych counselor was trying to intimidate new students at all? I want to call the orientation office tmrw to see what consequences there would be if I didn’t attend.
Any thoughts?

i find that very hard to believe about not being able to see a counselor if you dont go to orientation. they can’t hold that against someone.

call the psych department and schedule an appointment. Say you can not make travel arrangments to UCLA during your orientation. They cant hold that against you.

Actually, YOU PAY THEM, they provide a service. THey work for you, you dont work for them.

Lots of BS coming from that counselor, they really cant drop you from all your courses or any of that stuff.

I say it is BS.

if you paid for your courses and registered and etc they have 0 right to drop you just b/c they feel like it. Only reason they have to drop you is if you registered for a course you have not met prequisites for. Technically the Catalog is a contract between you and the school, and aside form what is in the catalog counselors can not just make stuff up to drop you

It is pretty strict but I do think they will drop you. You can take Psych 100 A and only one other psych class. It is extremely impacted so they don’t have enough room for everyone to take 2 electives and it wouldn’t be fair if some people got to take 2.

2 classes?

Looks like we all might as well pick a minor or something…
