UCLA Rejection ... I'm depressed. Help?

UCLA was not at all my first choice, and I've already gotten into two schools I would choose before UCLA. BUT, every school I applied to is ranked higher and more prestigious than UCLA. I don't get it, my scores/grades everything were WAY above UCLA ranges! I'm seriously so depressed right now because I am just expecting 13 rejections in the mail these upcoming weeks. My friends keep telling me it's because I'm OOS, but that doesn't help because shouldn't UCLA have preferred OOS this year? And my first choice (more then all the ivys I applied to) was UC- Berkeley. This is hopeless..

I’m also OOS and also felt that my scores / application should have guaranteed my spot in UCLA, my 2nd choice school…but I got super excited checking my email this morning only to be incredibly disappointed. Did you get the supplemental question thing that’s supposed to be for borderline applicants before being rejected?

im in the same boat as u guys! Ive applied to several ivies and UCLA wasnt really my top choice but I thought id get in! Still, we’ve got to keep our hopes up. I’m OOS too. I here that they accept 90% of students in state. Just because we didn’t get in UCLA doesnt mean we can’t get into our top choices! and you can always appeal…I’m considering it…

I didn’t even know about a supplement. I wish I had though… i definitely would’ve sent it in…do you guys know what it said?

I think they mailed the supplement to you or notified you if they wanted you to fill one out…about appealing, what do they mean by “new” information if that doesn’t include fall grades / increase in activities? What do people normally write about in their appeals?

lolwut? that doesn’t even make sense, if that were the case everyone in california would be going to ucla

UCLA does not prefer out of state. Sure, you can speculate that to get more money, they would accept a higher percentage of OOS, but still, that’s way behind the amount of students from California.

He means that 90% of the students they accept are in-state.

Yea^…obviously.

aznteiryakichef

yea i also received the supplement, worked hard on it, and turned it in. ucla was almost a safety for me stat-wise! i just don’t get it. I haven’t told my parents yet, i don’t know how i’m going to

You said you got into better schools (by rank at least) so who the hell cares.

I knew someone last year who got into CAL and was rejected by Santa Cruz, yes UC Santa Cruz (We told him he didn’t fit the norm of a half-caring, intelligent, liberal, pot smoker).

I never got a supplement and assumed I was securely in…so finding out I was rejected was a giant buzzkill

no not better by rank. i got into UMichigan which is basically the same rank wise but they have a much better polsci program and then i got into UT (my state school) honors which is worst by rank…yet i would save like 100 K if i attended, and i gues UT-Austin is still a good school idk

aznteiryakichef
SAME HERE! i basically considered myself accepted. ugh ■■■

UCLA doesn’t differentiate between out-of-state applicants and in-state applicants. At least, that’s what it says.

But I don’t think 90% of the students they accept are in-state. UCLA got some infamy last year for rejecting so many in-state students.

I got a bunch of mail from UT, not just run of the mill apply today but scholarships and stuff, and though it’s march theyre still sending me stuff lol, I wouldn’t mind going back to my birth state…but California…I’d be completely heartbroken if I lost my opportunity to go there, i guess my parents would be overjoyed they save a ton of money if I stay in Indiana (havent told them about UCLA rejection yet)

@jackdaniels
Michigan is one rank lower than UCLA and a lot less sought after. Their admittance rate is literally double of ours. ~20% vs ~40%. The rank of the school is steadily plummeting year after year and the route of the university seems to follow that of the automotive industry. It wasn’t too long ago when Michigan was ranked higher than Berkeley. The school has literally been losing 1 rank each year!

My advice is to stay away from Michigan. The outlook for the university is very negative.

Of course UCLA differentiates between in-state and out-of-state.

Looking back at the OP’s chance thread, the ACT score wasn’t exceptionally high and depending on the school, being in the top 5% may not be a particularly impressive looking GPA. You didn’t post any SAT II scores, and who knows how well they would take your essays. There was no reason to assume you were in. Being OOS, you probably have a better shot getting into USC.

@Jackdaniels, I wouldn’t be so worried. Colleges choose applicants based on different factors. College rankings shouldn’t be your only concern, I’m sure you’re fine! You could still get into more difficult colleges.

Like, I got denied from Penn but accepted to UCLA, there’s a place for everyone (:

no you’re right i didn’t think any of my scores were exceptional, but i was on the high side of everything UCLA wise. that’s why i don’t understand why i was rejected. everyone has told me my essays were good, so i figured they were. but you’re right. I suppose I overestimated myself.

i hope so, and thank you

so jack, if you don’t get into USC (i’m seriously doubting myself about USC right now) where would you go? not trying to rub in bad times just curious. I myself would probably go to IU Bloomington until i can transfer out

same…really devastated. got into ucsd today but still, heartbroken. it was my #1 choice. going to appeal.
i feel like my chances at cal are shot too now
