UCLA Rejection, too stubborn to accept it.

@dressforles
my friend got in for art history and she did TAP but didn’t put down an alt major…

I wish the best for UCLAHOPEEE, but Im soooo soo surprised, that she did not get in. I mean I know of a lot of people who got into UCLA with a 3.5 gpa w/o TAP. I wonder what went wrong?
Uclahopeee, must not have put an alt. major. For the alt. Major, you should just put down an easy major, just to increase your chances even more of getting aceptted.
She must not have put down an alt. major which was a big mistake.

^ i think i remember uclahopee saying that s/he applied for chemistry as their first choice - while anthro was the alternate major. maybe those people you know with a 3.5 that got in applied to a major that wasn’t as selective as anthropology. granted, anthro isn’t THAT selective at UCLA…but last year’s average admitted had a 3.57GPA. thats still a lot higher than what the OP’s GPA is.

They might be changing their admissions standards. So if two people are under the exact same conditions, yet one is oos and the other isn’t, the oos one might get in over the instate one. (Of course, this is just me speculating.) The universities have to make up for the loss in revenue SOMEHOW and they’re mainly doing it by admitting more students. (more oos to be precise.)

You didn’t have an amazing gpa, let’s get that out of the way now. Second of all, your personal statement could not have been that good, etc. Although the average is 3.4, it could be thrown off by other things (the mean is a better indicator.) If you do stay another year in CC, focus on raising your GPA. I got into UCLA with a 3.46 (avg was 3.45) but i had STRONG essays that i had reviewed by the transfer center at my school which not only discussed my love with the subject i was majoring in, but also problems within my life which explained my low GPA.

try not to feel to bad about it. I think the director of admissions put it best when he said that if you didn’t get in, don’t feel too bad about it. They had to reject like 45,000 people (think about that for a second, 45,000 people!) and many are qualified, but some people are just far more qualified than others (and when you meet the people who chose to come here, in general, it’ll be no surprise as to why they were accepted) they people that come here are generally very intelligent and come from a very diverse set of backgrounds.

i hope your admissions decision gets reversed, but harsh or not, you didn’t deserve to come here, and it’s true that there were many people who got in that were much more qualified than you were.

I called twice, and both times they were unaible to tell me why i was rejected. I’ll appeal but i’m just going to come to terms with it.

As far as “not deserving” to come to UCLA. That’s a very bold statement for not knowing anything about the student’s academic past and what comes with it.

Congrats to everyone else who got in, give some extra bruin spirit for me!

^ which # did you call? i called twice too and each time i was able to speak to someone who provided me with helpful information. this is the # i called: (310) 825-3101

UCLAHOPeee, Please give your STATS ONCE MORE…
I applied to UCLA, last year and I had:
3.3 gpa
Tap certified
did some volunteer,
finished my pre reqs which were those 3 classes.
Also for Tap, I CHOSE AN ALT. MAJOR WHICH WAS ART!

Did you not choose an alternate major for TAP??? WAS ANTRHOPOLOGY YOUR FIRST MAJOR?
I just find it sooooo soooooo hard to believe that you were TAP certified and all, and you still did not get in. This major is not chemistry or econ!!!

my statement was more meant as an obvious truth: if you deserved to go there, you wouldn’t have been accepted. You weren’t accepted, and hence –

my point is that you’re in complete shock, and i’m surprised why. Many people are telling you that it isn’t too surprising considering that you applied to one of the highest cited, and most prestigious universities in the world. You should realize that your low GPA, drastically different admissions standards from last year, as well as very high competition ultimately most likely led to your rejection. People are trying to provide you with a reality check, but you seem to be ignoring it. This doesn’t seem like a mistake on their part tbh.

If you really want to go, just raise your GPA and reapply next year. It’s not that big of a deal.

Beyphy, you are an interesting person, with a unique perspective on things. I hope you are getting the satisfaction you crave.

As for GPAs go, again i understand that my GPA is low, but for an anthropology major with TAP, it seemed to have been pretty good odds.

Here is something i think you might be missing:

Average GPA for anthro is, let’s say 3.6

Plenty of people have GPAs of 4.0/3.9 etc. So where do you think the other GPAs fall to give the overall a 3.6 average?

As far as “drastically different” admissions standards goes. It’s not far off from last year. I’m taking archaeology with other anthro majors who got in with anywhere from 3.2+

This is not grounds for expecting a decision, and in no way did i feel entitled. I was just a little surprised because rejection was not obvious.

It is probably because it was your second choice of major and they would rather give it to someone where it is their first choice with better stats.

Again, admissions is much more than just GPA. You can play the ‘chance’ game with people on here, and think your odds are good, but with holistic admissions, your odds might not be good at all.

Again, admissions are holistic. They might, and probably do, have many things in their life which you do not which worked toward their advantage.

I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch for me to call you entitled, specifically seeing as the thread title is

“UCLA Rejection, too stubborn to accept it”

that being said, i wish you the best of luck in your academic endevors, whether they ultimately involve UCLA or not (and i mean that sincerely)

Weren’t you a chemistry major?
Not to sound like a dick, but I think your personal statements could have bumped you up, if they were better.

I proofread your personal statement for you in November, just days before the dead line, and it wasn’t anything too spectacular at all. Remember I told you to have more unity and a stronger thesis? Not to mention there were even grammatical errors in it. You definitely needed to work harder on it because if you had, you’d probably have gotten in.

Don’t worry about it. No cool person has ever went to UCLA.

UCLA = Pre-Req Nazis

^Very very true

@ReachTheEnd

I got accepted into an impacted major and I was missing genetics, intro to molecular bio, and 1yr of o-chem with labs. I will have igetc done by this semester.

Idk if someone already told you this (I’m too tired to read all the posts), but call them and find out why you didn’t get in. I got on anthropology with a 4.0, no TAP, IGETC, and 2/4 pre-reqs done (I’m missing archaeology and 33).

I did call them, they finally were able to tell me that one of my courses was not transferable, therefore i was below the unit cap.

It was funny because i told them about my access to housing and my major on MyUCLA and they looked into it and told me to email someone about it because they could not discuss it over the phone.

Turns out i was originally accepted for anthropology, but my application had a couple things they needed to verify. Turns out they stumbled upon a class that was not transferable after 2009 and, well, you get the story.

Glad i finally got my questions answered haha

Not to rub salt in the wound but that is painful. I’m sorry this happened to you, it is one of my biggest fears for something to not transfer over. I hope that everything works out for you. Did you get in anywhere else or do you plan on trying again in a year? I honestly, and this is just my opinion, say just go somewhere else. I know its UCLA and all but ultimately you are not a better or worse person for going there. Furthermore, there are so many wonderful UC’s that offer a comparable education. Seriously, good luck.

it must not be that hard to get in…I have 3.7 GPA, 87 semester units and I think I’m missing a few IGETC courses…no TAP, NO EC, no high school, no testing, last minute personal statement, and I got in.
