UCLA (Sociology) vs CSULB (Social Work)

Hello everyone,

I am a transfer student and I have been admitted to the following schools: UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSB; CSULB, HS, CSULA

I have less than four days to choose a school and my top choices: UCLA & CSULB

I applied to majority of the schools as a sociology major. However, I do not know if sociology is what I want to do. I find it interesting, but I do not find myself in great passion for it. I got into CSULB social work program as well. Not sure about social work either.

Yes, I know I should've found my passion a long time ago but for some reason I still have not.

GPA:3.69

Questions & Concerns:

Honestly, the only reason why I want to UCLA is because of the education and resources. I would like to study abroad! I just do not want to end up studying something I just may not like or feel satisfied. And ultimately be in debt. Do school names truly matter in the work force? Many people have told me not to pass up such opportunity, especially school counselors but even then I feel they can be biased. However, UCLA is more of a risk that I find thrilling.

As for CSULB, I want to get into social work because a part of me does like helping people. And some people have told me that social work is a better alternative to sociology and I will have more job opportunities. If I go to CSULB I won't have to worry so much about money and hopefully have enough money to get my masters.

What do you think?

There’s not too much you can do in the field if social work without a MSW, which you can do after getting a BA in sociology. I too thought about social work for a while and strongly considered CSU Long Beach. I fell in love with Sociology and found the variety of courses exciting. I’m transferring to UCLA this fall as a Sociology major, and I’m really excited. I’ve looked at the courses they offer, the transfer programs, and the student organizations, and for me there was no other choice. The UCLA prestige factor helps too. Also for me it’s waaaay cheaper to attend a UC rather than a CSU because of the Blue & Gold financial aid package.

CSULB’s social work is a lot more practical than UCLA’s sociology major, which is more theoretical. Of course it’s cheaper and academically easier to go to CSULB. At the same time though, you get what you pay for. CSULB is good, but it doesn’t have the same resources and opportunities you’ll find at UCLA.

Then again, it might be smart to save all your money for Grad school.

Find out what specific aspect(s) you like about soc and classify it as either practical or theoretical. Then figure out if you would rather invest in undergraduate or not. Good luck!
