Hello everyone,

I am a transfer student and I have been admitted to the following schools: UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSB; CSULB, HS, CSULA

I have less than four days to choose a school and my top choices: UCLA & CSULB

I applied to majority of the schools as a sociology major. However, I do not know if sociology is what I want to do. I find it interesting, but I do not find myself in great passion for it. I got into CSULB social work program as well. Not sure about social work either.

Yes, I know I should've found my passion a long time ago but for some reason I still have not.

GPA:3.69

Questions & Concerns:

Honestly, the only reason why I want to UCLA is because of the education and resources. I would like to study abroad! I just do not want to end up studying something I just may not like or feel satisfied. And ultimately be in debt. Do school names truly matter in the work force? Many people have told me not to pass up such opportunity, especially school counselors but even then I feel they can be biased.

As for CSULB, I want to get into social work because a part of me does like helping people. And some people have told me that social work is a better alternative to sociology and I will have more job opportunities. If I go to CSULB I won't have to worry so much about money and hopefully have enough money to get my masters.

What do you think?

If you must go for one of these, go for the social work degree. You’ll never get rich, but you’ll always be able to find a job, and if you get a masters and keep at it, you may make some decent money eventually. Sociology is a fascinating discipline, but the demand for sociologists is very small. I have my masters in Sociology and I know what I’m talking about.

My advice would be to start looking at potential jobs and figure out what type of job you would like, what environment you’d like to work in, and or what field you’d eventually like to be in. After you figure out what type of job you’d like, then you can look at what major will get you there, instead of worrying about what your “passion” is and then trying to figure out what job you can get with your major.

Try to get a real idea for what a career in social work is like before you commit to it. It’s a hard road to go down and many social workers don’t stay in the field for long. It’s a very rewarding and necessary job, but it’s not for everyone. There are many ways to help people. Figure out if this is the right way for you before you devote yourself to it.

^^good advice above

You would be employable for other jobs and the UCLA name would help you. For instance, I know a sociology grad from a name brand school working at Google in People Operations. If you add extra statistics classwork you could work in advertising or business analytics at an internet company perhaps. There are some data fields where insight of someone trained in sociology can work. Just a thought. You would want to aggressively pursue internships. Of course you would also be able to go for a MSW but the cost would be an issue.

For LB, it seems you would be more locked into the Social Worker role. If you were committed I’d say go this route because it should be a good program and cost effective. Seems like you weren’t really ready to transfer since you are so uncertain.
