Ucla student transferring to Rice?

I know this is probably a typically asked question, but I've been wanting to go to Rice since middle school. I applied as a freshman and didn't get in, so now I'm trying to transfer from my current school, UCLA, to Rice.
I currently have a 3.5 GPA, have taken many competitive classes since I am pre-med/psychobiology major, and I have about 200 hours of volunteering and a quarter of research experience. I am also in two extracurriculars that I dedicate a lot of time towards.

I additionally have a 34 ACT, and relatively decent rec letters (it's hard to get close to profs in such a huuuge campus)

I know Rice doesn't offer very many spots to transfer students. Do I have a chance, being out of state? I don't have a 4.0, but I also go to a very competitive school. Please let me know what you think and what I can do to improve my chances!

Oh and I’m applying to be a junior transfer, btw

@nervoustransfer‌ I would be surprised if Rice denies your transfer application, i think you will be fine!

@thegrant thank you! Just worried since I’m out of state!

@thegrant: on what basis do you say to the OP had he/she will be successful? Have you studied Rice transfer admit data? It’s clear the OP is a solid student. But that doesn’t mean he/she can avoid being part of the 85% that get rejected. I certainly wish the OP the best of luck but just b/c they sound solid, you should encourage them only if you have rationale to do so. The “chance me” forum is enough of an echo chamber already.

My daughter knew a few friends transferred to Rice successfully from NYU and Tulane. I think you should have no problem from UCLA.
But OP, why do you mention OOS for Rice? Rice is a private school.

OOS is irrelevant for Rice. It is a private.

However, as a premed, it is risky to transfer as a junior unless you plan on delaying your med school apps.

Typically, students apply to med school the summer after junior year. You will hardly have any profs from Rice to get recs from. It will be harder to get recs from your UCLA profs since you will no longer be there.

Plus, it may be harder for you to immediately get involved in med-school-related ECs after you transfer.

When do you plan on applying to med schools? And will you be applying to the Calif med schools? If so, then interviewing back in Calif may become a travel-challenge issue.

I think you should stay put. (and the weather in Houston is the worst!!!)

Indicates that 101 out of 590 transfer student applicants were accepted (see page 9). Requires a 3.2 GPA minimum to be considered so that part is ok (and ACT score looks fine), but transfer admission sounds pretty competitive. Best of luck.
