UCLA students appearance-conscious

I've heard that much of the UCLA student body is extremely appearance-conscious and fashionable, especially the girls, which makes me feel nervous b/c I'm used to wearing whatever's comfortable, rarely wearing makeup, etc. but still looking appropriate and decent of course. =)

I might be generalizing too much and my question is a little naive. But to what extent is the student body appearance-driven? Will I be able to wear jeans/shorts, a tshirt, and flipflops everyday without feeling "under-dressed"?

One more: I've heard many cases where freshman (this happened to my friend) are assigned rooms with sophmores and juniors. Though this can be good at times, I'd rather dorm with freshmen who are about to go through the new college experience. How often does this happen to incoming freshman?

You can dress however you want. I just wear tshirt + shorts + rainbows during the summer and a sweater over that during the winter.

Well, there are a few people who will be completely decked out and ready to go clubbing or what have you - most people live in flip-flops. You'll be fine with jeans and t-shirt/tank combination. Really. If anything, everyone wears Hollister or Abercrombie (but that's like at any college campus).

If you're in the residence halls (Dykstra, Hedrick, Rieber, Sproul), it's less of an issue. Most of the students there are first and second years. For Sunset Village, there are more transfers/older-students. Hitch was dominated by freshmen this past year... In short, 1) most students who dorm are already younger, 2) some communities are more dominated by first and second-years than others, 3) older students tend to have paired up with previous roommates or their friends when rooming. I wouldn't worry about it... Choose a reshall if you absolutely want that first/second-year dorm-experience-feel.

Common trends and accessories:
- Rainbows, any brand of flip-flop
- Hollister/Abercrombie (usually the the former)
- Victoria's Secret PINK (or is it just me who notices this?)
- Bug sunglasses (should see them even more so the next few months. . . )

Winter: Uggs with black tights. . .

any guys reading this, it doesn't matter. t-shirt, jeans or shorts, flip flops or tennis shoes and you're good.

I will be in the computer science department, not much to worry about there.

Persians

Ugh, I am a total slob when it comes to dress. No makeup, "study hair" (all my hair pulled back and my bangs pinned), sweats/dirty jeans (from work...and a lack of laundry quarters).

Yeah, you'll have no problem if you shower regularly.

Don't worry about brands, either. (I live in my $2 Old Navy flip flops ><) IMHO, seeing Hollister & A&F look really juvenile and out of place. And a lot of girls wear PINK because there's a VS in Westwood and... some of their stuff is really cute ><...

i think it looks out of place on-campus when the brand name in large lettering across the shirt. . .

oh yeah and people seem to like H&M and urban? urban outfitters sucks. so does american apparel. overpriced and bad quality. amer. apparel - with the exception of a few things - is just plain tacky. idk, whatever. -_-;

I wear Wal-Mart/Family Bargain Center branded stuff. No one says anything.

just take what people wore in high school and expand it to a larger student body.
you have the girls who go all-out dressy, you have people in athletic wear, you have the miniskirts and uggs crowd, and you have me with the standard uniform of tee shirt/ucla sweatshirt, jeans, and flipflops.

wear what you're comfortable with- no one's gonna judge you. if they do, they should stop thinking they're in high school ;)

I wear 250 dollar jeans and I still feel poor.

D&G or bust.

I remember I wore a suit to my thermodynamics final. I was out of clothes, been studying for that class and only clothes left was a nice suit. On test day, I was asked what's the occasion? I replied back, out of clothes and didn't do laundry.

Another time I wore spandex (Lycra Shorts) to class. This was after a triathlon practice and didn't have time to change out.

I usually wear khakis/jeans with a polo. That's pretty much sophisticated as it gets since jeans/T are the most common.

^ hahahaha that first situation must have been cool though

I wore a USC T-shirt to class once, and no one cared.

flopsy, you really like the eye rolling thing, dont you?

No, he doesn't

i dont know where we got the rep for being fashion conscious. tons of people wear the ucla sweatshirt + jeans.

ucla sweatshirt and jeans sounds good to me lol

Yeah, everyone lives in sandals. Me and spam got our rainbows together, cute huh? Hahaha, but DOOODE my roommate hung his stupid wet laundry over it and it dripped water all over the top, now my perfect sexy footprint will NEVER be the same, ARGH SO ANGRY!!!

doubt it. probably soaking wet from your drippinrg udders, mrMOO.

shudders.
