UCLA Supplemental Questionnaire 2018

Hey guys, UCLA just sent me an email requesting additional information about my application. I’ve read multiple articles regarding this topic and from my own knowledge I’m assuming that this means you’re borderline. Who else received this email? Stats? Thanks!

Hey!!! I just got the email too! Haha pretty funny how I just stumbled across your post just two mins after you posted it as I tried to do research on it as well.

I think I am borderline.

Stats:
UC GPA: 4.12-ish

SAT: 1300/1600 (in my school we consider that to be “good”)

Essay: Pretty decent… I spent alot of time talking about my disorder/impairment and things that most people don’t like, but I do passionately. Also talked about my future dream for my family etc.

E.C: I didn’t participated in anything until Junior year due to my impairment that held me back and made me felt insecure about myself. Though, I tried my best to make a comeback (not by joining everything, but the things that I wanted to do in the past) and stayed committed to it.

APs: (Including senior year): 5 APs total. I did took regular classes as well and heavily EXCELLED in them.

Geographic location: More so in the lower income area with homelessness around us, and grew up in a poor income family.

Major: Undeclared-Life Science

I think the main thing about this is that they have read your application and have not determined a real decision…meaning you’re a MAYBE. Good thing is that you weren’t automatically put into the rejected pile, right? Any information you state can possibly tip the scale to a YES or NO decision.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU MY FRIEND! WE IN THIS TOGETHERR!

I got it too! I’m freaking out! We need to be optimistic! We can do this! WE HAVE A CHANCE!

just out of curiosity… are they open prompts or specific questions? if specific, what are they?

I just got this too, and I’m really happy because this means they didn’t just toss away my application. I have some pretty severe circumstances, and this just proves that they are giving me a chance. I have had medical complications all of highschool, so my grades suffered a bit, buut I think my SAT shows that I am capable. I poured my heart and soul into my essays and hope they appreciate everything I wrote about. I also have pretty good EC’s.

SAT: 1500
UC GPA: 3.6

@helpmegetinlol :
-In your application you may have mentioned an extraordinary talent/skill or academic achievement. This may include participation in Junior Olympics, national debate competitions, recognition for musical talent, etc. Please take this opportunity to share with us more detailed information about the level of your achievement, depth of participation, and passion for this particular area.
-Please describe any special circumstances that you would like us to consider that may have affected your ability to achieve academically. This may include personal circumstances, family experiences, and opportunities that were or were not available at your school or home. If you participated in an educational preparation program (i.e, EAOP, Talent Search, Upward Bound, PUENTE, etc.) please describe your level of involvement and how each program was beneficial to you.

I keep seeing other posts indicating that if you received the supplemental questionnaire then we are borderline/“maybes.” I received it as well.
GPA: 4.15
SAT: 1200/1600
AP Classes: 7 (including this year’s)
Extracurriculars: moderately involved with 3 leader positions.
Essays/PIQs: I took some time on them, but I was not overly happy with them. I’m good at writing extensively and the word limit didn’t help much. I was satisfied with what I said but not with how I said it.
Major: Pre-Psych.
All I can think now is that we have to answer these questions thoroughly because our acceptance is quite frankly on the line. Good luck to you all!

ok so are we supposed to answer these like creative essays or is it supposed to be straightforward? We only have like ten days so how are we supposed to write beautiful essays…

My son got this too. Did any of you get this from other schools too?

Do you guys think this supplement is a good or bad thing? im so nervous

I also got the supplement. I’m pretty average for an applicant and I thought I would have a 0% chance of getting in.

@chunklighttuna Thats exactly what I was wondering. I hope people who have previously wrote this essay can answer this question.

@knowledgeispower18 I only received it from UCLA also.

OMG I also received the email & I have no idea what to talk about this was a total surprise ! & I read that only 6% of uc applicants get this opportunity so good luck to everyone!!

My son received it today too. He has a 4.17 UC GPA/4.6 overall GPA and a 36 on the ACT. His ECs aren’t as strong as others as he concentrated on year-round sports. I’m not sure whether to be hopeful or nervous about receiving this.

Think of it as a very good thing. Basically this means that the students who get these are in a “maybe” pile. To me, it was initially surprising because my stats are very very low, with no expectation too get one of these things.

Very optimistic about this opportunity! I never expected to get such an email. My stats are very low for UCLA (1120 SAT and 4.1 GPA), but I think they really liked my EC’s and Volunteer work. Lets do this guys!

I didn’t get a Supplemental Questionnaire - should I be concerned? 34 ACT, 4.33 GPA

not sure exactly what all of this means, but I received this like the rest of you. I have a 1400 SAT and 4.25 uc gpa with solid extra curriculars and I felt like some badass essays. I did write about a severe medical challenge that I had to overcome which they may want further information about? If anyone has any definitive info or numbers, as far as acceptance odds if we receive this, I would appreciate you sharing.

Here are the five specific conditions under which an applicant might be selected
for an augmented/supplemental review (quoted from the augmented review policy linked above):

 Evidence of focus on an area of special talent which may have limited a student’s
time to participate in a broader range of activities.
 Evidence of character traits that imply a strong likelihood of making a significant
contribution to campus life.
 Evidence of significant academic achievement or the potential for academic
achievement at the University in spite of extraordinary or compound
disadvantage or learning difference, or physical disability or other unusual
circumstances.
 Evidence of significant improvement in the academic record accompanied by one
or both of the following: reasons for the initial poor performance; and/or sustained
and in-depth participation in educational outreach programs, which demonstrate
the applicant’s commitment to succeed academically within a challenging
environment.
 Evidence of relative lack of access to, counseling about, or support to take
college preparatory, honors, Advanced Placement (AP) or International
Baccalaureate (IB) classes or required college entrance examinations.

Best of luck to everyone and answer the questions directly.

Just got this email too! I don’t have the best stats with a GPA: 3.9 weighted and ACT: 28 but I had a pretty good upward trend, so I’m pretty confident it was my other info. I have really amazing EC’s and have had really significant hardships so I think that’s what they are interested in.
