Hello, I am a transfer applicant applying for UCLA Fall 2018 semester, and I have a question regarding AP credit and P/NP classes for major prerequisite classes. Also, If anyone has experience transferring to UCLA or Berkeley with AP exams please share your experience and how you inputted these grades and scores on the application. I’m getting lots of conflicted and potentially unreliable answers from my CC’s useless counselors, so I decided to post this on the forum. (Sorry if this post might be a bit long or confusing.)
To start off with, I am a History major and for my major we have to choose 3 history classes, 1 semester of World or European History, and 2 additional semesters of any other History class offered at my CC. I fulfilled all of these requirements by taking courses at my college for a letter grade (I took 1 semester of World, 1 semester of Middle East History, and 1 semester of British History all for a letter grade), but I am a bit concerned because I also passed the AP US History and AP Euro exams back in high school, and my community college gave me credit by listing the equivalent college US History and European History courses on my transcript with a “PASS” grade. The problem is that UCLA and the info on Assist.org stresses that ALL major preparation courses MUST BE TAKEN FOR A LETTER GRADE, and even though I completed my major prerequisites with other history classes for a letter grade, I am worried if having the “Pass” grades on major preparation courses would negatively impact my chances for admission.
I became very paranoid about this so I decided on retaking the European and US History courses at another nearby community college this Fall for a letter grade, (even though they are already listed on my transcript with “PASS” grades at my current college). I am also going to explain this extensively on my UC Application in the Additional Comments section. Does anyone have additional advice or experience with this? I have tried explaining this situation countless times with my CC counselors but they are all clueless. Should I call UCLA directly or try and meet up with a UCLA rep at my college in the upcoming months? I hope this will not be the reason I get rejected.
(P.S. - By this Fall, I will have all major classes completed, my IGETC is already certified, I have over 95 UC transferrable semester units completed, a great major-related extracurricular, ok essays, and I’m applying to a non-impacted easy-to-get-into major with a 4.00 cumulative GPA, so I hope this complicated AP credit/ Pass grade situation will not prevent me from getting accepted into my dream university.)
Thank You.
