@HarleyTheQuinn Can you share afterwards what they talked about there?
Never mind. For some reason, all my posts go to the moderation queue; that was sent way before you answered someone else asking the same question.
Sighh… I’m also planning on appealing. This is my second rejection from UCLA - was rejected as a freshman, went back and completed the few courses I had to in order to qualify as a transfer and now rejected again.
GPA: 3.92
CCC/major GPA: 4.0
Major: Linguistics & Anthropology
IGETC completed
No specific prereq courses for my major, but I did complete the one recommended course + both language requirements (and then some lol)
Non-traditional, first-gen student, 29 years old, low income, single parent, physical disability
No ECs but I own my own transcription and translation company so that plus the demands of parenting keep me busy
Extremely well qualified in my major - I speak six languages, am self-teaching two more; my focus is North Korean linguistics and how that plays into NK-US-SK relations
Ling + Anthro had an almost 80% acceptance rate last year, so either it got extraordinarily selective super quickly or something went wrong with my app?? I feel like I’m a pretty good match for UCLA…
@cenourinha wow your stats look amazing! There was someone who got accepted in my major with a 3.2 and all she talked about in her essays was being a single mom and going to school, I can’t believe they did not take you in.
@ishitak Sure
@UniCoIn I think the framework may be similar to being a single parent, but what details you pick out to tell in your essay will demonstrate your character differently.
It’s freaking hard!! But I think it’s so important to show my daughter that you can overcome any roadblock and achieve anything you set your mind to—my favorite essay I wrote was about how I’m leading her by example by going back to school I had a dream last night they reversed their decision and accepted me so hopefully it comes true ?
The appeal website is opened! Has anyone already submitted an appeal? I don’t know should I submit it now coz I want to hear back as soon as possible.
Whoaaaa, 7000 characters? That’s a lot! I thought it was going to be 500 words or so. I’m so relieved!
@cenourinha I just noticed that. I wonder why berkeley only allows us to submit 500 words but UCLA allows us to submit 3500 words.
7000 characters is not 3500 words. It’s based on characters. A word can be 1 character or 25 characters, etc.
Right my mistake.
Hey everyone, so I went to the workshop today. Here was the run down:
Only a couple of people went, so there were 12 of us. Some were waitlisted but everyone else was rejected. Our CCCP Director had us talk about our major, and if we got rejected or waitlisted. He did a slideshow and told us there are various reasons why we could be rejected, with the basics such as not submitting your TAU, not finishing pre reqs early, not doing well in fall classes, impacted major, etc.
There were a few students he brought in who got into UCLA with successful appeals. Most of them told us what they did was talk about something that wasn’t in their application, such as something that affected them (medical issues, etc). They told us that the best way to make a good appeal is to just talk about something that was not in our application at the time, and to be personal about what happened (although not too personal they said), and why you believe you deserve a chance at the school. Most of the information they told us was just regular information you’d hear anywhere. They also said to never use the phrase “You made a mistake” because so many people have tried doing that from that Berkeley appeal years ago.
They did tell us that there is less than 2% rate of reversal, so there is no guarantee that our appeals can be accepted.
They also told us that those who are waitlisted aren’t because it’s based on the school considering them to be eligibility, but because they base it off of numbers of acceptances. It sounds harsh but they said that it’s nothing personal.
Overall, they told us just to work on our appeals and have professors, mentors, etc look at our appeals, and there is no absolute guarantee that the appeal decisions would come before June 1st. They said the decisions would be between late June to mid July.
We were also told that we should not be too focused on the appeal, as it’s best SIRing to a university we were accepted into just in case and to avoid risk.
But yeah, this was all the info they gave us. Nothing really essential or in depth. It’s stuff we kind of know already
@HarleyTheQuinn I’d like to say thank you so so much for taking the time to go to the workshop and share what happened. You’ve given me some useful information I will definitely incorporate in my appeal. I will talk about a situation that occurred during the fall and information in the spring that will complement my main reasons.
I understand that appeals are rarely accepted and I shouldn’t have high hopes. Nevertheless, I will still try to create a good appeal and articulate my thoughts in a meaningful way.
Thanks again
SO, I called. The lady was SUPER nice and helpful even when I got a little frustrated. Basically, they didn’t like that my English courses were in progress at the time of application–I explained that they were the only two classes I was missing to qualify as a transfer, i.e., I enrolled in community college for the express purpose of completing them, so there was no earlier opportunity to take them! She told me I should definitely appeal because my grades are good and I did what I could with the time constraints I had (fwiw, I took accelerated 8-week versions of both English courses, took one during winter term, and got As in both).
took me TWELVE YEARS of uphill battles to get back to school, and I got denied because it turns out you can’t do things before you can do them
@cenourinha when I applied in Nov, I was enrolling Calculus 2 and still have one more English course to finish. Then I took the English course during winter and just updated the grade in Feb or March (I don’t remember exactly). When I applied in Nov, I still had the Econ course (for major) to finish. I don’t think it is the main reason.
@cenourinha where did you call to know the reasons? should I just call the UCLA admission to find out?
Yep, (310) 825-3101
@GoodAfternoonSir No problem! I always love to help
I went to the College Signing Day today y’all! It was honestly so surreal seeing Michelle Obama there. There were other celebrities that when too, like John Legend, Bebe Rexha, Conan O’ Brien, Don Cheadle, Pentatonix etc. at first I felt like I didn’t deserve to be there but there were so many students wearing t-shirts of their college acceptances, so not everyone who went is going to UCLA. Michelle’s speech was real moving and talked about how any path we take, we’ll always make the best out of it. I wish CC let photo and video links on here but I don’t wanna risk it since I’m still in time out until the 15th ?
