I am a CCC student applying for fall 2018 transfer. I am a Political Science major and I will have all the pre-reqs done, except the statistics requirement, kind of. At my school, they offer a Psychology Statistics (PSYC 104) as well as a Statistics course (MATH 103). I chose to take PSYC 104, because I was taking it during the summer and the MATH 103 course did not fit in my schedule at all. On assist, it typically states whether or not I can take PSYC 104 in lieu of MATH 103, but in this case it does not. I emailed the UCLA admissions office about this, and they stated that although it was an statistics course, it was not MATH 103. Since MATH 103 is offered at my college, I would be seen at a disadvantage, since I didn’t take it (their words, not mine). But, will this warrant me a denial of admission?
Here’s my stats:
GPA: 3.9
Major Pre-Reqs: All done, except the stats course.
ECs: VP of Democrats Club at my college for one year, interned for CA Dem. Party for three months, and interned for a congressional campaign for three months as well, and I’ve been working for the past two years.
Essays: I am confident in my writing skills, and I will be reviewing them constantly. So, in this case, let’s say the essays only benefit me.
I am also a URM, poor student. I mentioned this in the essays as well.
Could you give me any insight?
Thank you!
Whatever they are telling you, is what you need to go by. It’s their requirement if you want in.
Unfortunately, the reality is: If you want to gain admission to a 4yr college, you do what they want, not what you think will fit your schedule. If they wanted MATH 103 and you didn’t take it, then you need to take it. You are asking UCLA to admit you, not the CC. UCLA gets over 90K applications, it’s easy for them to move on to the next candidate who does meet the requirement.
So what? You chose it; UCLA doesn’t have to accept something that you chose instead of their requirement, so, yeah, you can be denied.
At your school that’s what they offer; at UCLA, that’s not their course that articulates since they don’t consider that statistics course equitable to a MATH STATS course.
Additionally, although you are confident in your writing skills, you didn’t do the research. The UC’s and CSU’s cannot admit by race. It’s against the law in California, at California public universities, to use Affirmative Action in admission.
@auntbea I did, in fact, do the research. I forgot to put in there that I am also applying to several other UCs that will accept PSYC 104 in lieu of MATH 103. Therefore, I did not want to put all my eggs in one basket, per se. But, my intent for posting this was not to get a lecture on what I should have done, and what I should have not done. I passed the course with an A and I am unable to take any more statistics courses. So, what is done is done. I am asking for the likeliness that I will be accepted or denied, because of the statistics course dilemma.
Not lecturing, just answering the question. As a former low-income, URM, I get how it works with the UC’s. I was admitted, many moons ago to UCSD. Our kids all got into their UC’s. Our son was admitted into UCLA with every perk, into their engineering major-NM winner).
They are very specific at UCLA because they CAN be. They get over 90K applicants that they have to review, so if something isn’t perfect, they deny. If they surmise that you weren’t aware of their non-affirmative action policies, and you wrote that all over your essays, then they might question why you included it in your essays as a future law student.
Given the vast amount of predicted applicants for 2018, and the fact that they already stated you need the Math stats course, the likelihood is that you do run the risk of being denied.
I really like you. I hope you get in. You are definitely UCLA material, I see a lot of myself in you, and I like how confident you are in your writing skills. It would be a shame if it didn’t count, and that you had that course issue. I would retake MATH the class you’re missing and get an A, and you’ll be a shoe-in my friend. We need people like you to raise the caliber of students, I know too many dumb hard working people who get into UCLA not from their intellect. Good luck!
Ok, after reading the rest of the thread, I see you’re unable to take STATS, and aunt bea makes a good point, don’t talk about affirmative action or implicate that you should get in based on your race in your essays. Yeah, denial possibility seems high… sucks… I thought you were a promising student with some raw talent.
All you can do is explain somehow why you didn’t do that MATH course, due to your tight schedule and busy life that you had, and that it couldn’t be practical. Then just pray for the best. It’s highly possible they’ll just deny you because you didn’t fulfill a requirement and your app wouldn’t even be considered, but I’m not sure. It has happened to me before for graduate programs.
As a fellow Poli Sci transfer, I can say that many transfers do not fulfill the stats requirement and get in. Your GPA will likely fall on the 75th percentile line for transfer admits to UCLA for poli sci when you apply. I might also note that the 90k number is being used in this thread, but that number refers to only freshman. Transfer apps are about 23k and together they make up the 100k+ apps that are mentioned occasionally. Your odds are good, so long as your major GPA is 4.0. A TAP certification (if offered at your CCC) would not hurt either. The fact that the course was offered will hurt you a bit, but UCLA only requires 3 of the prereq courses if I remember correctly.
@itsyaboiUCLA Yes, they require, at minimum, three pre-reqs courses to be admitted as a pre-Political Science major. That makes me feel hopeful!
