UCLA Waitlist Class 2022

@avz11ymc4 I understand, thank you for your kindness. I’ve had some time to rethink my life and I think I will be fine

@Me2000 reread the FAQ, the waitlist is not ranked.

Hi @chipotleismylife ! thank you for giving us info about you! When did you find out that you got in, and what was the housing situation like for you? Was there available space for you to live on campus still? Also, did you receive any additional scholarship money from UCLA? Sorry for all the questions haha I’m just nervous and a little info would help. Too bad I don’t know if I’ll even get in!!

@textbooked Thanks for the info! :smiley: Are you going to write an essay btw for the optional section?

@soccersistah7 Of course, I’m happy to help! I remember I had so many questions and was so anxious when I was on the waitlist so I’m glad to be able to support people :slight_smile: also a couple people I gave advice to last year got off the waitlist so I’m happy we can all be bruins together! I got off the waitlist in May, not too long after I SIR-ed— I remember finding out right after one of my AP tests actually! That was a pretty early time to get off the waitlist though, I believe they continued through June (and July, but that was because my year had budget problems). I didn’t receive any scholarship money from Ucla specifically but I also didn’t really qualify for any haha. In terms of housing, I think there was still a guarantee that I would get it, but I did get the housing that most people don’t prefer and not the majority of freshmen were in (but I ended up loving it because it was a suite style!) no worries about the questions, I’m down to answer anything!

@stressedoutEE Oh shoot thanks. I messed up lmao.

Then, are you guys writing some essays?

I am disappointed (like everyone else) that I got waitlisted, but I’m hopeful for whatever happens! When I opted in for the waitlist I added my fall quarter grades and wrote a page and a half about specific programs and opportunities at UCLA that I could take part of and contribute to. Good luck to everyone!! Whatever happens I know we’re all going to be successful.

Hey, I was waitlisted! When I opted in for the waitlist and pressed submit, the page didn’t change. I kept pressing submit just to make sure. It stays on my decision letter, is it supposed to? THanks :slight_smile:

Better not to write an essay as UCLA does in fact RANK students (Asked a close admissions officer)

@Anxiety82379e28ndl that seems to make sense. They would have to find some way to rank us because otherwise it would be like they randomly picked a name out of a hat and said ok this kid got in. Which doesn’t seem to make sense. So it’s nice to have confirmation they do rank us. An essay may be a little beneficial if someone is describing a new situation or something they were in this year, but otherwise I doubt it could help too much.

hi @chipotleismylife thank you for your input and help. Can you go over what you put in your waitlist essay? What exactly did you write. Just trying to get some ideas on what to write in my waitlist application. Thank you!

Graduating with 30 credits (7-8 classes a year)

BEFORE YOU say my GPA is low~~~

My school is pretty different when it comes to classes and grading. No matter if it’s an IB/AP/Honors course, a 0.5 is added. This is because there are some honors classes just as hard as our AP classes. AP classes have a set curriculum, but since a lot of honors don’t have a collegeboard curriculum, they can be just as hard.

For instance, AP Calculus BC was the easiest math (and best!) class i’ve ever taken (over Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra 2, etc.)

We also have a lot of requirements, including: physics, chemistry, biology, public speaking, arts, robotics, three years of language, etc.
And you must take the honors version of a science or computer science course before you take the AP. This means that taking an AP science course usually means doubling up on a science (unless you’re a senior and have fulfilled all three science requirements, but by then, the colleges won’t see it). If you take the summer school version of a physical science, you are still required to fulfill a ONE YEAR requirement for that science course (there really is no way out of it)

I also go to an international school, so honors aren’t counted for UCs

SAT: 1510
SAT II Math: 790
SAT II Physics: 780

Stats commentary:
Most students at my school who get into UCLA earn around a 1520, so i’m slightly below average in comparison. I’ve also met few people who have scored below an 800 at my school for math, so i’m slightly below average there too.

ECs:

  • Paid summer engineering intern at tech startup (reconfigured machines, did IT work)
  • Co-founded Girls in STEM club at my school (reach out to middle school and elementary school girls)
  • Coded/submitted android APP to Technovation Challenge
  • Dance (4 yrs, lead in school’s production)
  • MUN (4 years, held multiple leadership positions)
  • research in chip fabrication processes at my school
    -TedX speaker about photonics

Other ECs not as as related to my major or not consistent throughout all four years:
-Summer job at Jumba Juice
-UIUC electrical engineering summer camp participant

  • Interact: A club where you teach kids to read/write (1 year, 20 hrs)
    -Orphanage club (2 years, 40 hrs)
    -Volunteer farming (2 years, 20 hrs)

Essays: I spent months on these. But looking back, I don’t think they weren’t rosy enough because my writing style is very straight forward. Soo 7/10?

wow your stats seem great; what other options are you considering?

@stressedoutEE Your stats are more than great for UCLA but when they receive more than 110 thousand applications,
they are forced to decline and waitlist even their most competitive applicants for no apparent reason simply because there is not enough space. I’m sure you’ll do well wherever you end up going.

@kokotran

I SIR’d to Davis because it was the cheapest option for me (as I am dependent of a guardian who lives in CA, granting me in-state tuition)

The best schools I got into for engineering were only University of Washington (CoE, Purple and Gold Scholar) and UIUC, but the tuition wasn’t worth it to me.

@Heisenberg1700

I know, it sucks for everyone. My success is never guaranteed no matter where I go.

I was reading the UCLA FAQs and it said that the waitlist notification date is between May 1-June 1. I know this is different than other sources. I should probably trust UCLA FAQs right?

Guys I don’t mean to get your hopes down but the chances of us getting off the waitlist are extremely small if any. In the past, they have admitted around a 100 people off the waitlist of more than 5000 people. You can do the math. I would think its better to just deposit and commit fully to your other options. It doesn’t matter where you go as long as you work hard.

@Heisenberg1700 Well. Dont lose hope man. I was whitelisted for class of 2021, but was accepted later early June. I think I had the option of writing something down, but had given up hope at that point so decided not to write an essay or anything. I was both surprised and ecstatic that I got in. So don’t lose hope:)

@TheProdigalRoommate
So we shouldn’t have written an essay? rip LOL I poured my heart + 20 hrs into mine

@stressedoutEE
I wrote an essay too but kept it brief on new accomplishments (summer internship, academic awards, spring grade) and my plans to contribute to the UCLA campus if admitted. While the odds may be against us, I still feel it’s important to take your best shot. @TheProdigalRoommate What was the dorm situation like when you got off the waitlist?
