Wow, some of you guys have amazing stats. I’m amazed that someone with my comparatively terrible stats made it in when you guys got waitlisted.
Good luck to each and every one of you! Hope to see you this fall at UCLA!
@chipotleismylife any tips on what we should write for “additional comments”? I don’t want to write a little brag sheet but if we have to…
Wait listed for Geology (College of L&S)
SAT: 1900
W GPA: 4.4
Going to opt-in
Next choice: Penn State (main campus)
Waitlisted for Physics (College of Letters and Science)
SAT: 2150
UW GPA: 4.0
I’m going to opt-in and talk about the astrophysics research experience I’ve had these past couple of months working at a local well-respected observatory.
I’m going to SIR for UC Santa Barbara, but I will look at UC Davis and UC San Diego this weekend.
I went to New Anteater Day at UCI today and it was good and seems like a good school for academics, but it didn’t really stand out to me like any of the other schools I’ve toured so far (UCLA, Pepperdine, UCSD). I’m like freaking out though because I’ll probably have to SIR with UCI and it just doesn’t seem like the right school for me but is the best option I have right now. I just don’t want to go somewhere that I don’t like that much.
My apologizes, I didn’t realize that I don’t receive notification when I’ve been tagged in a post! I will try to check this thread more frequently.
@ttn2016 My major is psychobiology, which is one of the life science majors within the college of letters and science. I haven’t heard too much about Global Studies major either, but I do have a friend that is looking into minoring in Global Studies! Did you have any specific questions on it?
I’m not sure if treating it like a third personal statement would be excessive, because I remember that the maximum amount of words they allowed was a lot! I personally think its best to be succinct, because I had read that admission officers read your supplement over again multiple times, treating it like an application again. If they’re going to be reading so many of these supplements, it would most likely be best to be clear about why you want to go to UCLA and what you’re going to do here to make a difference. Because everyone that opted-in is going to appear as they want to go to UCLA, but what is going to set you apart from them? That’s what you should write about, in my opinion. Hope that answered your question!
@mathismylife You can reiterate some of the things from your application, but I think only if you’ve progressed in those areas. Like you could say that you’re still a part of your community service club and being an active member. I think that speaks a lot because senioritis is real and sometimes people serve for the sake of putting it in their application. I know that committing to causes and activities are something that are seen as favorable to the UCs, so yeah show that you’re still committed to things if you really want to highlight on some of your past accomplishments.
But as far as new accomplishments, I think I would focus on those more. It will show that you’re still trying to learn and improve yourself as a person, that you’re involved and that you care about things. I’ve always cared about serving people and the community, and those were the things I included in my writing supplement. I know it gives you the option to give grades but i personally didn’t LOL because my grades weren’t as high as when I had applied. I was really nervous when I was trying to decide if I should include my grades or not because I felt that I was being shady and seeming like I was hiding something, but in the end it didn’t hurt me. So yeah, don’t feel the need to tell them everything, just give them your best points about what you’ve been up to since applying!
@imvegetarian2016 oh thanks for the correcting! I didn’t know they got off that early, that’s super interesting! I guess they already knew they had a lot of open spots? I mean I guess if they saw that they had more spots than people that were left to SIR, then they could start letting people in early? I want to know more about haha I didn’t know that, thank you! That’s actually pretty incredible because they kept letting people off the waitlist into July, so the waitlist process was even longer than I had thought, wow!
Yes! I really recommend giving your input on why you want to go to UCLA, because I think it shows how much you care. Everyone applies but opting in and telling them how you envision yourself at UCLA will set you apart. I said this in above comments, but yes mention activities, clubs, organizations, jobs, etc that you might want to look into! It’ll help show that you have specific interests at UCLA. And don’t feel pressured to share any of your information just for the sake of sharing it if you don’t feel that its your strongest point. More information isn’t always the best; quality over quantity.
@manduhluv I didn’t give them my updated grades, and I don’t think I had accomplished anything too significant since applying-- I did briefly write saying that I got into Berkeley though, but saying that I didn’t want to go there and that I would definitely commit to UCLA if I was to be let in. I think it helps to affirm that you will attend UCLA if you get off the waitlist because they don’t want to have to keep sending letters to individuals on the waitlist if people keep turning them down. It prolongs the process a lot. I remember reading that some people got off the waitlist in July, but by then they were very torn because they had put so many payments down and had the mindset of going to a different college.
But yes, I definitely emphasized how passionate I was about UCLA. I really do feel that there are so many things to offer here. Maybe if you’ve visited UCLA you can mention some things that stuck out to you and could see being important if you were to go here? If not, I just researched a lot of the clubs and things that UCLA has to offer online and wrote about those. Sorry if i’m being repetitive to the above posts, I do believe that this is an important point though.
@kaatherinee Haha don’t feel the need to brag! Unless you think the things you brag about will be appealing to the admission officers? Just emphasize why the things you’re bragging about will make you a good fit at UCLA
I’ll quickly just reiterate three of my points that I feel are most important if anyone doesn’t want to have to read all that I wrote because I know it was long, haha and I’ll tag everyone who had the same main question, which was what to write about in the opt-in writing portion: @ttn2016 @mathismylife @imvegetarian2016 @manduhluv
- Write about what you've accomplished since applying, and write about why you want to go to UCLA and what you would do/get involved in at UCLA that would make a positive difference for the school. Don't feel pressured to write about things such as grades that might not reflect well on you. Be concise but show that you care.
- Affirm that you intend to go to UCLA if you get off the waitlist. They don't want to have to keep sending letters to individuals on the waitlist if people keep turning them down because it prolongs the admissions process.
Don’t stress too much! I know some people choose not to write in the writing portion at all. I have a friend that chose to only write, “I got into Berkeley but I rather go to UCLA and will attend if accepted.” It really just depends on the person who is going to be reading your application. Just do your best, it will all work out. Good luck! Hope to see you all as future bruins.
