UCLA?

Hi everyone, long time reader, first time poster. I am a senior this year and am starting to really freak out about admissions. I went to the last open house at ucla and fell in love. This really irritated me because my previous favorite was Loyola Marymount, which I am pretty confident about. Anyways, here’s my info, let me know what you think:
29 of 490 in class
4.2 GPA
1890 SAT ( taking November test)
28 ACT
3 AP Euro, Apush, physics
4 AP English language
3 years Project Lead the Way
President and Founder of school bowling club
NHS
4 years varsity, all area golf
Interact Club Member
Lots of community service, church, and work
I was also wondering what test I should use assuming I don’t do considerably better on the next SAT. I want UCLA more than anything now, I just wish I would have figured it out sooner. Thanks in advance!

BTW, my major is Civil engineering

Err, I also forgot to mention my two subject tests. I got a 620 math 2 and 610 math. I know that they’re bad, should I still submit?

Send in the 28 if you don’t improve. But that makes your chances pretty low.

Please calculate and post your UC GPA. Being a CA resident can matter a lot too. Can you afford UC OOS tuition?

If you can get a 2100+ on the SAT it would be a low reach for you. Right now an 1890 for engineering in UCLA is out of reach

4.03 UC GPA. I am a California student, and CSF every semester

Your SAT and ACT scores are almost equivalent and both are low for UCLA. Try to raise one of them for a better chance.

Are you in state or out of state, either way UCLA is a high reach for you currently you’d have a decent chance at UCI, UCSB, UCD

My rank gives me guaranteed acceptance to a UC, so I’m not really worried about safety, plus I have Loyola. I do, however, terribly want UCLA. I know that I am right at the average or below, but I don’t know what I can still do. I am going to study my a** off for the next SAT, but is there anything else I can do to help my chances? Will my subject tests hurt?

BRUHHHH, you’re guaranteed to a UC as in UC Merced/Riverside not LA. No way you’re getting into LA with a 4.0 when the average is a 4.6. if you get your SAT to above a 2300 you MAY HAVE A CHANCE and it’s basically required you get over a 750 for SAT MATH SUBJECT TEST since you’re civil engineering and even then it’s a stretch unless you have unique EC’s you havent mentioned that really put you over the top. Still UCLA is very GPA oriented so it’s a high stretch

@BucketsUCSC “No way you’re getting into LA with a 4.0 when the average is a 4.6. if you get your SAT to above a 2300 you MAY HAVE A CHANCE” You couldn’t be more wrong UCLA has a 33.4% admit rate for applicants with a weighted gpa above a 4 and a 15.7% admit rate for his sat/act score range. Now if he gets an sat score above a 2100 his chances go up to at least 40%. So even with his sat score and gpa he does have a chance and with a 2300 sat score he would probably have a +50% chance of admission.

@mattyicecold I wouldn’t submit those sat subject tests since mentioning low scores could hurt your chances. UCs don’t require you to submit such tests and it would probably be in your best interest not to if you don’t at least have a +750 score on math I and an 780-800 on math II to help boost your chances.

SAT and ACT scores are not high enough for UCLA.
The ELC means that they find a spot for you at Merced. It doesn’t mean you are guaranteed for UCLA. If that were the case, all of the ELC students in the state would overrun LA and Berkeley.

Your GPA is competitive, but your test scores will hold you back. As stated in above posts, get your test scoes in the 2100+/31+ range and you would have a decent chance. ELC will guarantee that you will get into a UC (not of your choice) which has been UC Merced if they have room.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the responses. I understand that elc means Merced, I was just saying that I have fall back plans. Both UCLA and USD ( which I am also applying to) recommend two subject tests, which I know is UC talk for pretty much required. Should I go against this ‘suggestion’ and not submit those, or will they not look at them if they don’t help?

I would not submit those low Subjects tests as they do not add value to your portfolio and only serve to substantiate your other low scores!

If you feel your SAT subject tests do not show your strengths in a positive light, then do not submit them but remember to be a competitive applicant you want to take advantage of all opportunities available to you as an applicant.

@Gumbymom a 4.03 GPA is competetive for UCLA that’s the average for schools such as UCI???

A UC GPA above 4.0 is competitive for most of the UC’s including UCLA and the GPA quoted by @BucketsUCSC is the uncapped weighted. The average capped weighted UC GPA for UCLA last year was 4.17. Yes you are below the average but in comparison to your test scores, your GPA is good but not great for Civil Engineering. Essays and EC’s are also part of the application review and these can make up for less competitive academics. UCLA is a Reach school based on your current academics, but you have good shot at the UCI/UCSB/UCD/UCR/UCSC. Raise those test scores and UCLA could be possible. There is no reason not to apply to UCLA if it is your top choice. Be realistic in your chances and have some good backup schools on your list.

Damn @Gumbymom that gives me hope for my dream school UCLA
