@amm444 sorry was away…with no internet…I will send you a private message!
just wondering, is there any way to negotiate merit scholarships? I have the New England tuition thing, so mines is lower already, but I only got 6.5k a year and the honors college, and I want more merit aid. Can I just email or call and request them to look at my app again?
Congrats to all that got accepted!
@DonnaEv I hope your S hangs in for UConn, as you seem like a great Mom and it’d fun to have another eastern MA family nearby. What did he decide, or is it still up in the air?
@frogdragon118 I emailed admissions rep for MA as my S did not receive merit we were expecting. No response yet. Also registered for accepted students day to show continued interest. Good luck.
@becautious Thanks for thinking of us. Still up in the air as far as his decision goes. He has been accepted into Umass Amherst, URI with an invite to honors college and a chancellor’s scholarship and WPI with a merit scholarship/loans. I am a single mom and it would be a financial stretch to pay full OOS tuition. I was really surprised he did not qualify for a merit scholarship. We are waiting to hear from BU and NU now next week. No decisions yet. He will make a commitment after that.
@DonnaEv He has nice choices, so congrats. Please stay in touch to let me know where he ends up. What kind of Rnginner dies he want to be?
@DonnaEv sorry, meant what type of engineer does he want to be?
@becautious Computer. He was set on UConn. Really impressed with the whole school, environment and program. What’s not to like, right?
following are from the official Uconn website rewarding to the criteria of Honors Admission:
Typical first-year Honors students:
Averaged a combined SAT score of 1400 (excluding the writing component); 32 on the ACT
Graduated in the top 5 percent of their high school classes.
@becautious my son did the same. Accepted to stay on waitlist for Storrs.
@reenski That’s great, fingers crossed! Are you in-state? What’s his intended major?
@munchmunch123 my son got Uconn spim acceptence letter yesterday. Are you IS or OOS
Question: Is it true that UConn is empty on weekends because the kids tend to go “home?”
I don’t think its true for Storrs from what I’ve heard but that’s interesting.
@motortrend someone I know visited Storrs a couple of weeks ago and was surprised how empty it was during the weekend. They asked the tour guide who confirmed that kids tend to go home on weekends. We live in Florida…
Generally people stay on campus. Some in state underclassman might go home if home sick or they don’t make friends on campus. Most people stay on campus. Virtually no one I knew went home more than 1-2 weekends per semester. I would say it would depend on what your friend group is. If you are friends with people who enjoy doing fun activities on weekends like going to sports games, hiking, partying etc, then most of your friends will be on campus nearly every weekend.
@belink. Good question. We are in California and my daughter is definitely looking for a campus where students stay around on the weekends.
We live in NJ and none of the kids we know come home on weekends, save for possibly 1 or 2 longer weekends here and there. They say there are plenty of people around and plenty of things to do. With 18,000 students, I can assure you that most students do not go home on the weekends.
Saturday tours of college campuses are notoriously “quiet”. Kids sleep in and there are no classes, so there is no hustle and bustle in the academic areas.
For UConn specifically, the layout of the campus, with the academic buildings in the center of the campus and the dorms on the perimeter, Saturday mornings are pretty quiet when touring. I would not consider it a suitcase school in any way.
@negirl508 Where are you in CA? I grew up in San Mateo but live in Boston area now. Did your daughter accepts UCONN and what is she majoring in? I am thinking since she is from out of state that choosing a Living Learning community might be great way to make friends out of the gate.
