UC's - Engineering

Hello CC!

I am rather confused about subject tests. I do realize that they are not mandatory but I still think I should take it as it is highly recommended. My questions are: Do the subject tests play a role in your admissions? & Is December too late to take subject tests? I'm applying to UC Davis and UC San Diego. Thank you!

UC Davis neither recommends or looks at the SAT subject tests, but UCSD does recommend them. They will help you if you score well in the MATH2 and Science subjects, especially if your SAT/ACT scores are lacking in those areas but it not a do or die situation. These schools will look more at your GPA and class rigor.

@Gumbymom Would you say that it doesn’t play a role necessarily in admissions to the college but rather admissions to your major? My math on my SAT is my stronger suit than critical reading.

It depends on the UC. Some UC’s admit by College, some by major. UC Davis admits Engineeers by academic department.
UCSD does not admit by major, but since Engineering is impacted, the competitive SAT subject test scores would probably boost your chances in any of the impacted majors.

@Gumbymom Thank you. December is not too late to take it correct? I just report it straight from CB? & Davis’ engineering is not as competitive as UCSD I suppose since it’s not impacted.

UC Davis/UCSD require that they have your SAT scores by end of January, so the December test date is fine. I did notice that UCD will look at Subject test scores only if they benefit the applicant, meaning if they are low, they will not hurt you.

@Gumbymom Thanks! I was also wondering if it’s fine to take only one subject test? I want to make Math II and feel like I can do really well on it however I’m not feeling physics. Is it fine for UCSD and UCD? Will they only take one and consider it?

It’s still better than none I guess but it’s also relatively cheaper because of late fee.

Since UCSD is very competitive, it would be to your benefit to take another science SAT subject test as recommended. If you do not feel confident in Physics, take Chemistry or Biology.
