Hi I am applying to UC Berkeley and UCLA as a computer engineering major. Although the UCs don't require the Subject tests, they strongly recommend you take the math II and a science one if applying to the college of engineering. However, I haven't taken them.
Was planning on taking the math one only in December though. Will not taking these tests or just taking the math subject test hurt my chances of getting in? Could you chance me without taking these tests?

Valedictorian of class, super high GPA, and didn’t (wouldn’t) take a science subject test? Seems fishy. Even fishier than taking it and getting a low score. I think you should really consider “recommended” to be “required”.

Saying it seems fishy makes no sense. I simply didn’t know if I needed to take the subject tests as they are recommended, and I already have pretty decent stats.

Ok, I will clarify. You are saying that you are planning to take the math subject test in December, which I don’t quite understand since you already posted a score for that in your chance thread. Is this just another hypothetical chance-me?

If you are really taking the math subject test in December, adcoms will wonder why you didn’t also take a science test at the same time. That is what looks fishy. What is this person trying to hide? S/he obviously knew subject tests were recommended, yet only took one? Why not just take the science test at the same time?

If your answer is “because I didn’t sign up for one”, I believe you can sign up for the additional test when you show up on test day, but do confirm that if you decide to go for it.

And I was planning on retaking the math for a better score. And my school didn’t offer a chemistry or physics class in my junior or senior year, so I wouldn’t be able to score too high in the science subject test. These tests would obviously be a plus if one was to do well on them, but not taking the tests doesn’t look poorly or affect one negatively.

While I respect your opinion of the situation, I was asking what my chances were or if it will negatively affect my chances. Not that it looks “fishy”

I was only trying to help. Putting down your one respondent is not a way to encourage others to post.

You obviously have an aversion to my use of the term “fishy”. Substitute instead “lowers your otherwise very good chances.” One outcome may be that you don’t get accepted directly into the engineering school, and have to start in the College of Letters and Science.

It will not lower your chance significantly, but it will have some effect. They say “recommend” but like @mobius911 said, you should look at it and see “required”. However, my cousin got into UCLA engineering without the subject test (but he had higher scores than you ; 2300 SAT and a lot of AP scores) so I would still apply but would not be surprised if rejection comes.
