Here's another one for chances at UC schools. Live in California. Here's the deal:

-About 3.2-3.3 GPA (ouch), class rank = top 15%
-ACT = 32 (equivalent to 1420 SAT)
-Took SAT II Writing, Literature, and Math I just recently, no scores yet.
-Eagle Scout, plenty of service hours
-lettered in Track?

Applied to:
San Diego
Santa Barbara
Santa Cruz
Davis

Is the 3.2-3.3 gpa the UC gpa?
If so, I would say

SD = Reach (sat above avg. ec good. gpa (as you know) low)
Stats for SD: Avg. UC Gpa = 4.05 (or so), Avg. SAT ~1300
SB, D = Slight Reach/Match (sat way above avg, but UC gpa avg for those schools are in the 3.7-3.9 range)
SC = I'd say you're in here

Good luck! All those schools are possible! (I applied to SD,SB, and D as well so gl to both of us =)

I don't really know exactly what the UC GPA is. Mine is just an average grade deal of the 4.0 scale with AP classes giving the one point boost. I figure that's probably what the UC GPA is anyway.

By the way...I have 3 Ds on my transcript. Note: I scored a 4 on the AP test for the class I got a D in both semesters (AP Lang/Comp). Hopefully they notice that...

The UCs just keep getting harder so your GPA and not being in the top 10% will be an issue except at SC. For my son it worked out to go to a local cc for the two years to get into his UC of choice. Soon to be step son was rejected by Cal, UCLA, UCDS, UCSD, UCD and only got into Irvine with a 3.5 and 1440 last year. Good luck!

With 3 D's I'd say chances at all but SC are not looking great. I'm glad you didn't let that keep you from applying though. Did you apply to any other schools? I know some of the CSUs are still open, or as the above poster pointed out going to a CC and transferring to the UC of your choice isn't a bad option at all. If you're interested in privates in CA you might want to look into Uni of Pacific, Santa Clara U., U. San Diego, U. of San Francisco. Great scores by the way! Those will really help. Let me know if you have questions, I applied to Cali schools so I know some stuff :)

Hmm.. not really interested in private schools in cali, as I'm probably already accepted to BYU so I'd rather go there than a CC or something like that.

Sure drops fast. Any other ideas/suggestions? I'm thinking of a major in liberal arts areas, something to do with writing and literature maybe centered around music or something,

Hey, you could possibly make to all UC's. Depends how u presented urself. My brother got in last year into ALL uc's with a 1380, 8002c, 750wr, 690lit and a 3.6 WEIGHTED GPA for Economics and Mathematics. But ofcousre, he did aca deca, mock trial, volunteer, editor of nationally awarded newspaper, and got individual national journalism award. But then again.......i dunno but it seems that alot of stupid and normal people in our school get into UCla and ucb(we're public California school)......last year we had 18 UC berkeley and 12 UCLA...and we regularly get those numbers somehow. Also depends what u wanna major in....my brother had straight a's sophomore year but several C's in junior year...but his 5 in Calc bc as a junior and 800 2c obviously showed he could do math

rpproductions - I put that I want to major in Econ on my UC app (I wasn't sure between that and poli sci or another social sci). Do you think it will hurt that I only have a 630 Ic? I thought all college of arts and sciences majors are weighted equally...I have stronger verbal/writing skills with a 710 w. and a 33 on the Eng portion of the ACT. I'm currently taking AP stats and have had all As/Bs in math...I don't know why I can't score highly on the math tests. Do you think this will hurt me?

well it may hurt since uc's use a set formula like : SAT score+ 2Math 1 or 2c+2Writing+ SAT 2 subject.......+GPA(no idea how that weighs in)

but UC's DO put emphasis on tests which can be a lifesaver for some.....not for others.....a 710 writiing is good....but what is ur subject test score? Maybe take something like lit or history idf u have the time.......also retaking math 1c is not a bad idea.....(even if u have toruble in math....the curve for 1c is brutal, but u just need to be careful of dumb mistakes and im pretty sure u can get 670+)..i improved from 700 2c to 750 2c in just one month(and im pretty sure if i didnt leave those 8 questions blank it wouldve been higher) =)

thanks, yeah I found something from the UCSB website:
College of Letters and Science
Choice of major is not considered in selection except for computer science applicants, who are selected using engineering criteria (see above), and dance and music performance, which require an audition.

And:
The grade point average is most heavily weighted in the academic index, accounting for about 60% of the total. For applicants to engineering majors, the math test scores account for about 30% of the index, while for applicants to Letters and Science and Creative Studies, verbal and writing test scores account for 30%.

Looks like my good writing/verbal scores will help, and that picking Econ won't hurt me. Thanks for the response though.

Just got in my SATIIs:
Writing - 650 (this is rather disappointing to me, of course I took this one first and forgot that wrong answers count against you...)
Math I - 750
Literature - 710 (thuoght I did worst on this, pleasantly surprised)

Was hoping for at least 700 on each but that's life. I'm not like half of the kids on here who go nearly suicidal (or pretend to so as to appear intelligent) if they don't get over 750. So does this change anything?

I agree that Flopsy is a little optimistic. i went to Princeton Review to make sure I'm seeing what is representative at my kid's LA school. The average GPA at UCSC is 3.46. 90% of the admitted students were in top 10% So these are 2 key factors where you are below average. The third key will be SATIIs. If you blow those away and have a great essay then you have a shot. But I think it's really important to stay realistic and have back up plans you like. My son was very dissapointed by UCs a few years ago, all has worked out but their harder than most think for freshmen adnissions.
