Yes it says “received, decision pending” ): @WinstonZayne
Is anyone that got in planning on going somewhere else?
My son declined UCSB. Trying to decide between UCSD and UCI @dood523
@michelledont, Thank you. My daughter emailed UCSB and that was the case. Apparently, she forgot to add UCSB in her fafsa application. So she went back to fix it.
@dood523, my daughter is more than likely going to Clemson, OOS cost of UCSB is just too much for her right now.
Friend’s daughter declining UCSB bc OOS tuition too costly. Likely to attend Univ of MD.
Does anyone know how big of a freshman class size they are looking to have?

@brasiliana7 Congrats on the successful appeal!! Are you an incoming freshman or transfer?
@hockeymom2000 is he going to play club hockey at UCSB?
helloooo. so i’m still debating on whether or not i should attend orientation. i don’t really want to spend the money and the only thing i care about is class registration. is it worth it to go to orientation? if not how do i register for classes??
We’ll be going next week to orientation so I can give you feedback then, but I have heard it is helpful. If you don’t go, but sure you understand the process and timing for enrolling in classes.
Has anyone heard any confirmation on housing? My S18 didn’t apply fast enough so he wasn’t able to make a selection, they just told him he would be assigned and not to be surprised if it was a triple.
One other question I forgot to post - if you have registered for classes already in orientation, how many credits/classes did they recommend? I’m hearing from some people they were told to only register for 12 units.
Back from orientation - for those that are curious, it was a good event. The students get a lot of advisor time to learn about classes and then actually register prior to the close of orientation. They also have an overnight in the dorms, learn about various activities and resources, have a student panel Q&A that is just for them. Glad to see they talked about mental health services and transition to college. S was happy he got his first choices for classes.
For parents - Day One includes a walking tour and welcome assembly, then a break out for engineering, college of letters and sciences and college of creative studies. Then there are 13 items to choose from for the afternoon, followed by student services presentation (includes billing, university police, etc), a “packing, prepping and parting” presentation and finally a parents social.
Day Two - More about student services, rules, an student panel Q&A, several choices for the workshops, then tips on how to support your student and services they have as well. Lastly, financial aid session.
You likely won’t spend much time with your student as their schedule is different for the most part, but very fun to see them make friends, etc.
@xxkookiexx hope this helps. Not sure how you resister outside of this process.
@lovespink Thank you so much for the info! I will be attending orientation on the 18th after all
@lovespink I will be attending orientation at the very end of the month. My parents chose not to pay the extra money for me to stay at UCSB overnight, so I was curious if I was missing out on anything fun by not staying overnight.
I honestly don’t think you will miss much. They do a social for all students the first night that ends around 11pm. My S said several kids who didn’t stay in the dorms still went to that which gave them the same opportunities to meet more people. Beyond that, you get a lot of time to start making friends and getting comfortable. At the opening presentation, they ask all the students to introduce themselves to four people sitting near them, plus you will still have some meals on campus, etc. You should get a great feel for the place even if you don’t stay overnight. Enjoy it!
