What did they exactly say? And are we going to get the major we selected?

@colleges2014, they did not tell us if we got into the major we selected. Basically, we were asked to stand up (all of the students invited) and then were told that we were admitted. That was it.

We were not told if we made it into the Honors program, if we made it into our first-choice major, etc.
Decisions will be posted on the 17th so you can check the portal then for the information!

A few tidbits that I picked up today…if you are not accepted to Honors initially by invite, you can apply after each year as long as you have GPA of 3.6 and number of required classes and you willl be automatically admitted to Honors…if your GPA drops below 3.6 you automatically lose honors status…no grace period.
also, if you need certain science classes for premed or other science majors, they highly recommend that you change your major from undeclared or whatever to one of the science majors prebio or pre- chem
so that will get priority for those science classes. this can be done via phone call to admissions until day of orientation. Ucsb seems to have good premed opportunities and also an Honors Health Sciences program that starts in junior year.
another tidbit of info was that most likely you will end up in a triplet…about 2/3 of freshman end up there…also, they will guarantee 4 years of housing…if you stay for 2 years on campus, they guarantee 2 years at university appartments. nevertheless, 2/3 of students move off campus after first year. Cars are allowed but not necessary…if u have one fee is $350/year …
Final tidbit…they seem to have plenty of job opportunities on campus even for non-work study kids. The admin officer I spoke to said that she had 20 kids working for her and only 3 were work study… I like my kids having little job for their personal expenses…

Why would I be invited to the reception but not get the Regents packet? Are they connected?

@mcro14, They are not connected at all. You didn’t get the Regents packet, since you didn’t qualify.

As for the reception at Irvine, it went something like this:

Arrived around 12 o’clock for registration and went inside. I was guided to pick up my name tag and I went around to browse. It was fairly crowded with students/family members talking up the volunteers there. There were drinks (Mountain Dew, water, and etc) along with snacks (different types of cookies and etc) as well. I talked to an alumni and asked him questions about school life, dorming, and etc. Around 12:45, everyone was told to go inside for the program at 1.

After getting a seat inside, a lady introduced the school. Basically told us about the GPAs of the applicants, SAT scores, the number of applicants, how they had to reject more than they accept, and etc. Then she told us that we’re top applicants, asked us to stand up, and told us that we’re all accepted. Lots of clapping was ensured, and then we sat down. The Chancellor came up and told us some anecdotes, and etc. The Chancellor was fairly humorous and seemed like a kind Chancellor. After that there was a video about the school that was okay. It was cool seeing a video of the campus. They invited us to come visit the campus on a date posted on the pamphlet. Then, there was a panel of students, faculty, and administration, who all answered some FAQs. I left after the FAQ and that was pretty much the reception. Of course, I took some cookies and drinks on the way home though~

Tl;dr, went inside, was told we were accepted, and then they tried to convince us to attend the school.

Thanks for so much useful and specific information. It’s great people like you that make CC such a wonderful forum.

Your fan,

@mcro14 Regents were invited but they were the top stat group at the receptions, not the majority of invitees. UCSB also has an ‘honors’ group which gets priority registration and counselors etc (Regents get it too), and I think the rest of those invited were more at that level. Top applicants, but 10% type top, not 1% type top.

(One of my sons got the invitation but did not get Regents, also.)

The LA reception went the same as what others have said about Irvine and San Jose, Chancellor Yang among others spoke and did a great job selling us on UCSB. Dean Nisbet (apparently this was her last reception, she is retiring) had the students stand and she congratulated them on their accomplishments and announced that they were indeed admitted to UCSB One thing I did not hear mentioned and we somehow forgot to ask about was the honors program and any benefits it would provide. I know there’s a description online but I would think they would have mentioned it if they were automatically invited to be a part of that. We may find out tomorrow which is the official decision date. Anyone have more info on that?

I cant wait for the DC reception!!! Ucsb is my #1 atm!

Honors status will be with your acceptance

I got accepted into UCSB, but I don’t see any Honor Status with my acceptance. I did attend the Chancellor’s Reception (was invited) as well.

Yes, I was wondering that too for my son.

I was officially accepted today. I got the Chancellor invite for DC, which is this Saturday. So I’m pretty sure all those who got it were accepted.

For what it is worth, our son got the Regents and Honors letter several weeks ago, but his official acceptance letter today on the online portal says nothing about either of them. So it seems that absence of any language on the portal does not mean an absence of these awards. Probably the Honors people (those not Regents) will be notified in some other way – maybe by snail mail or by separate email?

@SoCalDad2
The acceptance letter says nothing about Honors, but there is a little emblem at the top of the decisions portal that says something about Honors if you look close enough. Also, under the major that you have been accepted to (I think??) it says something like “Honors College: Congratulations! You have been admitted.” I didn’t get Regents. I didn’t even get invited to the Chancellor’s Reception (which I thought was the only way you could get Honors), so I was pleasantly surprised.

^^^ Hmm, I don’t see either of those, but our son is Engineering, and maybe the format is different.

I don’t think everyone invited to the chancellor’s receptions is automatically admitted to the honors program.

@SoCalDad2 I did read that the engineering college handled honors differently, from one of the old threads last year.

Daughter was at the Los Angeles event, and found out via email the next day that she is in the Honors Program. My hope is that honors students are only booked two to a dorm room!

I got invited this year to the reception. Does getting invited guarantee that we got honors?
