UCSB Chancellor's Reception 2014

@collegevetting - awesome! I have twins also. But my twins decided to finish HS in three years instead of four so now I have three this year. And one also a freshman in college. Ugh. $$$$$$ Best of wishes to your family.

@ProudMomofjunior - There were originally six locations. Not sure which ones don’t show up. March 8(Seattle), March 9(SJ), March 15(Irvine), March 16(LA) - all of which I believe (if told correctly would make the acceptance announcement. The two others are March 22(DC) and March 23(NYC) which may or may not be guaranteed acceptance. Hope that helps. I can only relay info that was shared today but it may or may not be true. Seattle and SJ did tell everyone they were accepted!

Wow, expensive!

The last two receptions you list are after admissions decisions will be posted on March 17, so I can see why there will be no announcement. I guess all who get invitations will know whether or not they got in before the date of the reception.

Ahhhh! The light dawns…for some reason had March 27th in mind as date acceptances would be posted. Must have been confused with another university. So, given the astounding number of applicants this year everyone should be extremely proud! Thanks all.

@collegevetting - the chancellor will not be at the DC or NYC event. Bummer because he was the absolute highlight of our day. Very likeable, funny, charming…we were thoroughly impressed. He wife was the most unassuming person there. She took a family photo out in the back hall. Found out later it was his wife.

Attending the Irvine event. I rsvp’d the day I received the invitation. The online confirmation was real strict about not sharing the email address with other kids. I hope I see some students I know there. My stats are only a 3.9 W GPA so I would be surprised if I am in the top 1%.

Yah, I definitely am not in the top 1% of applicants either.

Also, for the NYC/DC events, since they are after the decision date, it is pretty easy to infer that people who got them are accepted. Why would a UC spend money/resources/invitations on people who do not get in? Plus people who were rejected wouldn’t even go to the reception anyways.

I guess we’ll see in 2 weeks for sure though.

Are there people who only gpt invitations to those two events (DC and NY)?

or similarly last year, did people only get invited to Chicago or Denver? I’m just kind of curious

All of the UC’s are now taking a “Holistic” approach to what the top students are. 50% grades and 50% other (ED, Job, Leadership specific, etc). Just because you have a 3.9 gpa does not mean you are not in the top. Told that by four different UC admissions teams. @adpl4485 @beachball101. Of course, those students with off the charts gpa/sat numbers are given special status for that achievement.

the 14 FaCtors the uC system weighs

 1. Grade-point average 2. Test scores 3. Performance in and number of courses beyond minimum a-g requirements 4. UC-approved honors courses and advanced courses 5. Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) – CA residents only 6. Quality of senior-year program of study 7. Academic opportunities in California high schools 8. Outstanding performance in one or more academic subject areas 9. Achievements in special projects 10. Improvement in academic performance 11. Special talents, achievements and awards 12. Participation in educational preparation programs 13. Academic accomplishment in light of life experiences 14. Geographic location

@jeannelacelle UCSB weighs academics half and other factors half, so people could be in their view of the top 1% without the absolute top stats. But I don’t think the other UCs weigh it half and half. They all weigh those elements you list, but how they weigh them varies by location, I am pretty sure.

Thank you for all that information, though! We have all been waiting to hear from San Jose and Seattle!

Congrats to everyone invited to an event and all the Regents winners. Just to confirm, have all of the Regents winners been notified or is it possible that some will find out when admissions decisions are posted on the 17th?

@SoCalDad18 Sorry to say it but I’m pretty sure all the Regents scholars have been notified.

^This is true. I didn’t get one either :(.

They did say in SJ that all Regents Scholars have been notified weeks ago :)

My daughter didn’t either, although we knew it would be a stretch. This really leaves little hope of a Davis Regents Scholar too.

Does being invited to the Chancellor’s Reception (San Jose, CA) mean you’ve been accepted for SURE? I don’t wanna bank on that if it’s just a rumor since UCSB is my first choice right now after being rejected from UCSD and Davis.

@colleges2014 Yes! Everyone invited to the Chancellor’s Reception (San Jose, CA) is accepted. We were notified at the event. Confirmation of college and major will be available on March 17th and financial aid awards will be posted on March 19th. Congratulations!

Did anyone go to the Irvine reception today? Was it the same outcome as San Jose (i.e. “you’re in!” announcement)?

At the Irvine reception, they told all the students to stand up and told them they were admitted!

Thanks for the update! And Congratulations!
