So I thought I'd start a thread so that we could get to know each other now that more of us have decided on UCSB! Just write a little something about yourself and questions, concerns etc. Hopefully we won't have to go in next year not knowing anyone =)

Okey doke so my name is Sara and I live like 30 mins from Sacramento (unfortunately). I'm a pre-bio major right now and I'm hoping to double major in biochem and poli sci with a minor in spanish. I plan on going into the medical field but i've been known to change my mind =)

I was hoping to do the adventure intramurals they have like kayaking, canyoneering, etc. cuz I love the outdoors. For fun I mostly just like hanging out with friends. I'm not big on shopping, which is good since our mall burned down =) I party sometimes, but I'm more focused on doing well in school. I love meeting new people and I'm really friendly and outgoing, though I do have a bit of a potty mouth.

I'd really like to stay in either Anacapa or Santa Cruz after visiting the campus on Spring Insight. My biggest concern is just that I won't get along with my roommate since I didn't put anyone down on the prefs..... that would suck.

Feel free to add me on facebook! Just search Sara Frederiksen and it should say I go to Del Oro High School =) Just let me know you're a UCSBer!

I hope this helps us get to know each other a little better. Maybe we won't be going in blind!

Hi! My name is Linnea! I’m majoring in communications next year! I’m so excited about UCSB! I think I’m gonna play volleyball there next year. Don’t worry Sara I swear like a sailor! I went to the insight thingy too and the campus is so pretty. I really wanna stay in FT! One bathroom for four people? Much better deal I’m actually thinking about switching my major to biology too! I do like to party but I’m still serious about school. I don’t wanna get TOO distracted I dodn’t put anyone down for a roommate either… I’m praying for us!

I’m Joel and I’m from marysville. just submitted my sir today and i’m thinking about either FT or anacapa cuz they have the honors floors so i guess i’ll be living by one of you ladies. i’m a computer science major and i’m thinking i might do the summer program. anyone else doing that? I play tennis and golf but i don’t think i’ll play exept maybe intramurals. congrats to everyone for getting in!

I’m Metehan (Turkish) from Santa Barbara. I submitted my SIR recently and will like on Santa Catalina. I will be a computer engineering major and hope to live on one of the normal floors. I didn’t get into the honors program (I have no idea why, I’m pretty sure I’m more than qualified).

I think it’s kinda random honestly. Haha my parents wanted me to do computer stuff but I’m not so great with technology =) I wish i had some ethnicity in me… i don’t know what I am but i know it’s nothing tan =(

=[ I didn’t go to spring insight and know nothing about the dorms. Can anyone tell me more about FT and Anacapa? These two dorms seem to be the most popular. For now Im leaning towards Manzanita because I don’t like sharing bathroom with lots of people. But are the Manzanita houses single gender? and does it house a lot of freshman?? i would prefer living with freshman

FT houses 1/3 of the freshman is a mile from the main campus, apparently has really sucky food. When I went I didn’t like that each floor was pretty small. It does have you sharing a bathroom with only four people though, which is why a lot of people like it.

I liked the two stories (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa) more because each floor is so big and they had more of a ‘community’ feel to them. Anacapa and Santa Cruz are identical, Santa Rosa is a little older but still nice. Anacapa is the closest to campus and basically right on the beach. From what I could see (from creepin on some people as they opened their doors) the rooms are decent sized. You do share your bathroom with about 1/4 of the floor but the bathrooms are cleaned pretty much every day, whereas in FT you’d have to clean your own (hope you get clean neighbors (= ).

San Nicolas is really tall and a lot of the rooms face the ocean (which is nice).
San Miguel has a reputation as San Mighetto because it was a little dumpy. It got renovated recently and when I went it wasn’t bad at all.
Both of these wouldn’t be MY first choice, but I wouldn’t complain living in them at all.

Manzanita (Village) overall is just not great for freshman. First of all, there are almost no freshman living there. Second, it’s not a dorm, it’s a bunch of actual houses. Your key only works for your house so it’s harder to socialize with people outside of the house you live in. It’s the nicest community but not the best idea for someone completely brand spankin new.

Here’s how I ordered my housing:
Anacapa - Closest to campus, has an honors floor, I don’t care about having my own bathroom
Santa Cruz - A little farther from campus, has the first year experience community =)
Santa Rosa - A little older than the other two but same general feel, no fun floors
San Nic - Possible ocean views, a little farther out
San Miguel - Not terrible, not amazing, but definitely liveable
Santa Catalina (FT) - too far from main campus for my taste
Manzanita - Reasons stated above.

Then for communities I put:
Honors Floor - Anacapa
First Year Residential Experience Floor - Santa Cruz
Honors Floor - San Nic

I did these mostly so they wouldn’t put me in FT. Definitely ask around though, don’t just take my word for it. For people I’ve known who’ve lived in FT, half of them absolutely love it, and half hate it. Just go with what’s the best for you =)

Hiii
I’m Shannon, from the L.A. area, and will be majoring in Communications. Submitted my SIR a couple of days ago.
I went to Spring Insight but didn’t get to see the dorms, in fact I have no idea where is best to live, was hoping for some help on that… ): I don’t know anyone who goes there, either, so I’m kind of clueless right now.

hsupergirl and linnea11: im communications too!

I’ve walked around the campus but I didn’t go on a tour, so I don’t know what anything looks like. I’m also really nervous about who they are going to put me with…I’m wondering whether I should just find someone on a roomate finder website…

As far as dorms, what I heard from someone I know who is a freshman now:
-her favorites are Anacapa, santa cruz, then santa rosa
-santa catalina has a nice community feel, but is farther
-manzanita is more for upperclassmen

I think I’ll probably go for Anacapa or Santa Cruz as my first choice. Santa Catalina is a little far, and I’m lazy and don’t particularly like the idea of biking a mile or more to class. ;(

Hey! I’m Joseph, and ill be double majoring in Economics and Accounting
I’m an international student from the Philippines, but i’m American, Spanish and Filipino.

How’s everyone doing?
I’m going to be new to Santa Barbara this year, so i’m really excited to make a bunch of new friends. If you want to check me out at fb, my name is Joseph Gallego :D
