Strengths: ACT score, Care giving in the Alzheimer’s patient center, Volunteering, consistency with my vocal and japanese programs.
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Passion for medicine/neuroscience reflected in my essay.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted: 7 in total so far (2-LAC with large merit awards); rejected: UCSD/UCD; waiting for my dream LACs - only two more weeks and the wait will be over.

General Comments: UCSB was my first choice public college. I am still waiting for the decisions from my dream LACs. Really need a small school environment. So far I have done pretty well where-ever my application has been looked at as a holistic package and not just GPA based

@cdanny…I bet you applied to engineering…and that’s super competitive…has nothing to do with being white male from CA…you probably would have got in with another major. Hope you applied to a safety. Calpoly is not safety

Calmomofthree… Yeah except did you see the Asian immigrant male a few posts above mine who got into the same major my son was rejected to with a 3.2 and a 27 on the ACT. Really? I have been looking up court cases and schools have been ruled against for giving extra points based on minority status. Guess that’s my next step. Try to get this system corrected!

Soooo…financial aid?

@CDanny Being Asian is usually unhelpful in college admissions. They’re considered an overrepresented minority; only underrepresented ones get a boost. Just thought I’d point that out.

@CDanny…my daughter is also white and got into UCSB with almost identical scores as your son. I really believe it came down to her personal statement letter. Good luck to your son in his college process.

According to the most recent UCSB campus profile, 45% of undergrads are white and only 17% are Asian. So, I don’t think race was the deciding factor. More likely other factors like the personal statement, ECs, etc. Not to mention, they need a certain number of international and out of state students to pay higher tuition costs to balance things out. My daughter is bi-racial, identified as African-American and I would hate it if someone thought she got in just because of her race. She has worked very hard to get into UCSB (4% of pop.) and I am proud that she did!

waitlisted
uc gpa: 3.71
SAT I: 1770
SAT II: Chinese 800 Math II 720
AP Chinese (5)
Taking APES AP ECON AP CALC
Do I still have any chance?

That “poor me, I’m a white male” attitude probably came through in your personal statement.

@tellmeimapossum my daughter was accepted and not in the top 10%, more like in the top 20%. Her stats are posted previously. I think her EC’s and personal statements (which were her own and not edited by any professional) were significant factors. She’s white, middle income and not 1st gen college.

@cdanny both of my white sons got in, although their stats were higher. I sweated bullets over one of them, but not because he is white, he is just in a group of stats where they pick a bunch but deny a bunch more. The Asian above whose stats you cite also mentioned he had suffered hardships (unspecified) which presumably he discussed in his essay. THAT is likely why he got in, resilience to hardships is a selection factor. He well knew his stats on their own were low for UCSB, and he is right, but obviously something else about him convinced admissions that he could be successful there.
