Last year, someone said got rejected from UCSB while being accepted to UCLA. But UCSB was the top choice and sent in a letter by mail and got accepted. In your case, stats are great and I am not sure why she was rejected but I think it is worth a try appealing explaining the situation. If it does not work, save money by doing the lower division at community college and transfer. She should have applied at many UC’s instead of only one.
@motherof13: Chicano Studies is in the College of Letters and Sciences at UCSB which does not admit by major so her reasoning in picking a supposedly “easier major” for a better admission chance was completely wrong. If she has any compelling reason that she should have gotten admission besides her stats, then she should appeal the decision. She should realize that having high stats is not a guarantee.
Doing the community college route with TAG will be an option as suggested in the above post or have her take a Gap year and apply to more schools this time.
The NACAC will have a list of colleges in May that were unable to fill their Freshman class and many times there are some very good colleges on the list. Here is the link: https://www.nacacnet.org/news–publications/Research/CollegeOpenings/
@motherof13 She should appeal; give it a shot! You never know what could happen. If she still isn’t able to get into UCSB, she could go to community college then transfer to UCSB.
@bigfandave thank you. you’re right. Just feel really discouraged because berkeley is my #1, and idk how UCLA is gonna go down tomorrow at 5 pm

@delsthediaz, @bri180 , @coxswain23 , congrats!!! and to everyone else too. It’s a big accomplishment. Also, anyone out there who will be a commuter to UCSB, please let me know. How do you feel about this, do they allow freshman to have cars/use parking? We are deciding if our son should commute or have one yr. at least in dorms to make friends etc. Hey CC community, what are your thoughts on this? Cost is somewhat a factor too, of course. But, maybe we can swing it for a year…not all 4.
My daughter was waitlisted last year with similar stats, plus she was 1 of 5 national merit scholars in her graduating class. I believe she applied under sociology. We are CA residents and she is Caucasian (I believe these 2 stats matter when applying to UC’s). She removed herself from the waitlist as she had great options in other schools and decided on Cal Poly SLO. She will tell you she is at her dream school and recently commented that she is so happy that this is how it all worked out. Although it is hard not to feel slighted/all of the emotions please try to trust the process and have faith that it works out as it should. We are not looking forward to going through this process again in a few years with our youngest but we will certainly go in with a much different mindset! Best of luck to your son. He will land in his best place!
Thank you. DO you mean that it is harder/more difficult to get accepted if you are in state and “white?”
@Becheap4me2: Race/Ethnicity are not a consideration in UC admissions but being in-state vs. OOS that is considered. Not sure why the poster made that comment about Caucasian.
there is plenty of evidence to suggest that readers are trained to look for other factors such as English not be spoken in the home or other factors that are strong indicators the applicant is not caucasian and those applicants given extra consideration for their hardship. yes readers are trained that they cannot consider race but they are specifically trained to look for other factors.
@Stealther You can ask your counselor about how many people got accepted. Overall the engineering majors are taking a huge blow, i know some dude who got into University of chicago for mechanical get rejected from SB with the same major, but got into second choice major.
@thatinvisibleman If I remember correctly, the only enginnering major at UChicago is molecular engineering.
Thank you for all of the advice. We have decided that she will pursue her spiritual path and instead focus on her Mission and spreading the word of the Lord during a gap year. To all that have provided support, we thank you and hope that you continue to follow in the light of our Savior.
This was our first rodeo and hopefully, at the end of our baker’s dozen, we will be able to get the hang of this process.
@thatinvisibleman do you mean “blow,” as in not getting as many applicants, or harder to get into UC eng. this year? than even uchicago?
@BeCheap4me2 I think it means harder to get into this year. My daughter has several friends trying to pursue engineering that are very qualified, and definitely among some of the most competitive with regard to GPA and SAT scores, being waitlisted and rejected.
I’d be very interested to see the numbers of those applying with engineering as their intended major. It certainly seems as though there has been a spike in numbers this year - I wonder if my interpretation is correct?
The article posted about the reader definitely suggests that, while first level reader are instructed to be race blind, at second level, the senior readers do consider races to balance the race profile.
I just got into USC after being rejected from UCSB…
