UCSB Reception URGENT

My son just received the chancellor’s invite to the reception for top applicants yesterday in snail mail, no regents, no email re: anything yet. We are in the SF Bay Area/Peninsula. Glad to have found this thread - I just couldn’t figure out why they’d have a reception for applicants before the final decisions have gone out…

Update: I just today received the letter to go to the reception, so maybe the Meet Your Admissions Counselor is connected in some way

I’m really happy to have gotten the invite, but to be honest SB is not too high up on my list. Does anyone know if being a “top applicant” for UCSB means good things for other UCs (mostly speaking about UCSD and UCLA)?

@africastle: I know someone who works within the UC system (NOT as an admission officer, for the record) and he said that if you’re a top applicant or a Regent Scholar at somewhere like UCR or UCSB, then you’re a likely candidate for being admitted into UCLA as a regular student. I have no idea how true this is, however, so just keep your fingers crossed…

@africacastle omg I applied to ucsd and Ucla too! I was wondering the same thing too and if other uc schools do the same thing with invites.

Just got the letter about the reception today! Don’t despair! There may be more to arrive on Monday!

i wonder if it’s different for different regions because i have a few friends that applied to sb that did not get the letter

I was just at the Chicago one too. It was okay but as the other person said, no one was told of their app status which kinda disappointed me but oh well. I kind of expected more but it was decent. I thought it was funny how I was like one of three people who were of minority lol.

Two years ago DS received the invitation to the reception and the audience was greeted with congratulations for acceptance. Interestingly he was later accepted formally via email yet was placed in his 2nd choice major in school of engineering- he wanted ME and was offered CS. He was very disappointed and did not ultimately attend SB. He also was rejected at UCLA and UCSD. Happy ending … He attends his dream (private) college and loves ME there. It all works out.

I just attended the reception in Seattle and they told all of us at the beginning of it that we were accepted!

thanks for posting that @wishuponthemoon. i was really anxious after reading that the chicago reception didn’t mean they were accepted. im from the bay area and will most likely attend the san jose reception and im assuming that the acceptance is based on region and that i am in.

Wow now I’m extremely anxious. I really shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up. Booo

@marigem315 are in state?

FWIW…my guess is there are considerably fewer applicants in the Chicago area than there are in Seattle for example. I suspect that for areas like Chicago UCSB invites ALL applicants. Then for areas with a large applicant pool like LA, Seattle and San Jose they invite those that they consider admitted.

S is going to the on in San Jose on March 9th., will know if my theory holds water at that time.

im hoping the same thing @dietz199

What were all the locations for the receptions?

The locations and dates for all receptions: https://www.sa.ucsb.edu/rsvp/incs/Chancellor’s%20Reception%20FAQ%20for%20website.pdf

Thanks @dietz199

don’t know if its anything of note but the California dates are an hour longer

i just received the mail that i was invited to the reception… i am in new york.
