@WinstonZayne You’re absolutely right, 8,000 is ridiculously large. However, I heard a lot of colleges (especially the UCs) are expanding the waitlist and becoming more conservative with admittances to more accurately meet demand. Also, if I had to guess, I’d say 8,000 were offered and around 5,000 opted in. 8,000 is unprecedented.
@cwburke so you’re saying that colleges, even though they’re receiving more applicants each year, are accepting less people? How does this meet demand?
@WinstonZayne When I say “demand” I’m referring to the class limit. I don’t want you thinking this is reliable information, either. It’s just what I’ve heard.
I was waitlisted and I submitted an appeal. They recently updated my portal with “Appeal Status: Pending” or something of that sort
I’d like to know how many waitlist applicants appeal.
@cwburke as would I. I’m also a waitlisted applicant who appealed.
@cwburke you should call the undergraduate office of admissions tomorrow and find out. They should have all of the numbers by now as the appeal deadline was on April 15th.
If you do call, post their response for all of us to see!
@dood523 I’ll call tomorrow and ask about admittance numbers, waitlist numbers, and appeal numbers. I’ll let you all know! Anything else I’m forgetting?
@cwburke That would be great! Asking how many people were offered a spot on the waitlist and how many opted in to be placed on the waitlist too would be ideal to avoid confusion.
@cwburke thank you! Maybe another thing to ask would be if both the first and second choice major are considered again for waitlist? Or if its just the first?
…also if you get a chance. please ask if the waitlist appeals are looked at separately from the rejected appeals (since the answers have been all over over the place) - Thank you!
I just got off the phone with the admissions office and they don’t have admittance statistics for this year on hand, so I don’t think they’ve categorized the information yet. They did say, however, that last year’s waitlist size was around 6,600 and 875 were admitted.
Hmmm okay thank you for calling!
Does anyone know how many people they are admitting to the freshman class this year? Like how many total spots were available?
@dood523 I specifically asked that question and they don’t know yet.
On a separate note, I’m very curious as to what you all talked about in your appeal.
@cwburke I talked about familial issues that hindered my ability to perform as a student as well as what I would do at their school should I be accepted. I included my transcript with last semesters grades and two letters of rec.
I just rejected my offer from UCSB for Poli Sci. Good luck for those on waitlist, my spot is now open!
UCSB has open campus and an extension. Most people can go to UCSB without formal admission. https://extension.ucsb.edu/static/open.jsp
Thank you! @Intelectric were you originally accepted?
@cwburke I wrote my appeal about one of the hardships I experienced this year and how I overcame it with an ASB position this year, a medical mission I took to Guatemala in February, and becoming a CIF champion for soccer.
Just curious, how many of us here submitted an appeal?
