I am an Anthropology major who want to pursue cultural anthropology but am having a really difficult time choosing between UCSC and UCSB for my TAG.

I like that they are both supposed to have good programs and are in great environments but I am having difficulty digesting the stereotypes, which many current students have told me isn't too far off - SC is a school where marijuana is very present whilst SB has a very full on party hard drinking culture.

Personally, I don't like either.

PROS:

UCSC - great location, good program, supposed to be somewhat smaller than other UC campuses, if I really need to I can live at i home and drive to school.
UCSB - okay location, good program that states emphasis, beats UCSC in the ranks.

CONS:

UCSC: I believe I am within the geographic region, ergo it would be easier for me to get in without using a TAG (don't want to waste it), marijuana, bursts of crime in area, low tier UC, offers anthro classes at an every-other year basis.
UCSB: Drinking culture, party culture, being one of the few minority and broke students on campus.

I think you’ve captured the decision well. You could apply to both and delay making the choice until Spring.
Another thought - Davis. If you have the stats, apply there too.

I’ve attended both-- I can’t speak for Anthro, but I liked both colleges. It’s true I had an undergrad experience at one and a grad experience at the other. If I had to do it all over again? UCSC for sure. Loved it. I didn’t “love” UCSB. It was OK. Did not live in the dorm there, and the party culture in IV was so very silly looking back on it. Less a focus on learning, more on grades, image, party, etc. More a So-Cal culture, less “chill.” Being by the beach was so very nice, though. On the other hand, the redwoods are lovely at UCSC. For me, a beautiful natural environment is important. I don’t know what it is like for minorities now, but my cousin is a minority and I think he’d be happy there. Not so sure about UCSB.

Thank you both @NCalRent and @Bookwizard I submitted my tag a while before these responses because deadline was in September but I value the input given and it will factor into my final choice of applications!

I decided to tag UCSC by the way (:

Just wondering, @NCalRent, why do you recommend Davis?
They are a school I never put an insane amount of thought into but I’ve heard the name come up once and a while, can you give any insight as to why Davis would be a good choice? Thanks!

Davis is the next teir up in the UC system. US News places them nearly 50 spots higher than SC for whatever that’s worth. Though there are drinkers and smokers in Davis, it isn’t part of the campus identity. Nobody will call Davis a ‘Party school’. Seems like you don’t want a party school.

No beach, and the redwoods are transplants but, it is a very nice campus and a great college town.

I think its worth consideration.

My impression is UCSD is harder to het into as a transfer but I could be wrong. They’d be worth a look as well.

Why not apply to both and see what happens?

Thanks @NCalRent!
I really appreciate your input!
I might try to take a trip up to Davis to check it out then.
Rankings, while relevant aren’t weighed too heavily in my decision, I just want a school with a good program and a good atmosphere.

Honestly, as someone with not a lot of money, I want to choose my campuses wisely and only select a few, probably 4 maximum.

I’ve already tagged UCSC and am pretty set on giving Cal and UCLA a try so who knows where that 4th app will go.

I’m also taking major prep. into consideration.
UCSD, for example, doesn’t “recognize” the major prep I’ve done for my major that most of the other UCs accept. And because I never truly considered UCD I’m afraid I might not meet all of their undergrad major prep and gen ed. (though I’ve done IGETC).
