I am currently a sophomore at UCSC and want to transfer for fall 2012 to either UC Santa Barbara or UC Berkeley. My UC GPA is 3.5 and I am a literature major. My SAT is 1700 but I don't know if that matters so much as a transfer...what are my chances of getting into either school? I have heard it's harder for UC to UC transfers because preference is given to CC students.

SAT doesn’t matter unless it’s absolutely atrocious. Your GPA isn’t helping at all, and it matters the most. It isn’t looking too good, to be honest. You’re mostly competing against 3.8-4.0 GPA students. Can you get awesome letters of recommendation? What are your ECs?

I know UCB is a long shot but UCSB’s website says the average transfer GPA for 2011 was 3.44 so I figured I had a shot. It also says they accept 46% of applicants which is promising. I’ve only gotten A’s and B’s at UCSC so far and I don’think my GPA is so bad. I have most of my GE’s done and will have finished all my undergrad requirements by the end of spring quarter.

I’ve heard this too, and wonder if it is true. If so, it seems extremely unfair. You’ve earned the initial admission, paid the tuition, done the work. They ought to allow UC to UC transfers first, then fill whatever is left open with CC transfers.

Transfer slots ARE designed for the juco transfers – such students have no where else to go to obtain a BA/BS.

To transfer between UC campuses, one needs a compelling reason, such as major not offered at your campus. For example, applying to transfer to Cal-Haas bcos your campus does not have undergrad biz is a good reason. Family/finances can be a good reason. Prestige is not.

Other than a state college, where they are garaunteed admission. Transfer agreements between the UC’s and city colleges are nice, but it’s not as if a student doesn’t get into a UC that their academic career is over.

In my opinion, doing well at one UC should show the other UC’s that you are a student capable of handling the work load and succeeding in the UC system. And that’s important, because a fair amount of students can’t handle it. I have heard of people transferring from one UC to another, so it’s not super rare. I think a lot of students remain at the same UC because they go into university knowing what they want to major in. I didn’t, and feel like UCSc isn’t a good fit for me (personally and as a lit major).

To be honest if you really want to transfer you should look into a private school. They look at everyone the same and the cc transfers do not get a special preference over the other 4-year students.
